    :c

    sorry to see man.

How much is a rebuild/new housing?

    also, where did it go?

also, did it at least make a cool sound when it failed?

Probably a billion pieces out of the exhaust. I haven't heard anything rattle in the exhaust.

No clue on cost, need to call on monday.

Nope. It didn't make a noise at all. Just went from 25psi to nothing with a big black poof out the back.

Plan is to get it rebuilt and sell it.

    Going to order a 7163.

The 7163 supposedly spools faster than the 6758, and makes more power up top. There are dyno plots of them spooling faster than a GTX2867 and making the same power as a GTX3076 on other platforms. Yes please.

eh, it was a "Gen 1" so it was a matter of time. It was 5 years old at this point, don't get me wrong, it super fucking sucks and I didn't want it to happen or anything, but, it's lasted the longest of any turbo I've ever owned, other than the Comp 6262. It's still going strong.

Now I have a reason to order a 7163. I've been lusting after one for a couple years. I still love EFR turbos. Feels stockish but makes big power.

I'm 100% confident this was my fault... Installed a high boost canister that didn't crack the wastegate open until 20psi. It spooled like a K04 and was fun as hell, but pretty sure overspun the assembly on spool up for it to spool that fast. Gamma-Ti doesn't like that, apparently.

The medium boost canister that was on it would start cracking open at 12psi, so boost on set would go fast, then slow, then fast again. I didn't want to tighten it anymore, was afraid of running out of wastegate flapper travel. I was trying to remedy all that stuff.

So... technically I fixed the issue? LOLOLOL

How did you like the 6262? Im trying to decide on a bigger turbo when I finally decide to pull the trigger on rods and possibly built head, staying 1.8.

I wouldn't do it again without at least throwing in a stroker crank and going 1.9L minimum. You'll need cams to really take advantage of the turbo. So that means even less bottom end on top of the giant turbo. And with a turbo that large there is no "possibly built head" scenario, it's a "so which valvetrain components am I going to use?" scenario.

The 6262 was hellish fun, but I wouldn't do it again on a 1.8L

I'm going to put together a stroker bottom end for the B5 this winter.

Seems no one can rebuild a EFR....

The only places I call that answer tell me they can't and suggest other places.

BW told me they only deal with distributors/dealers and that I have to contact my local distributor/dealer to inquire about repair, said "Thank you" and hung up.

Been trying to contact Boost Lab on the phone because a couple places I called told me they are sure that BL can rebuild EFRs. When I call it just goes to voicemail.

You'd think being as large as BW is that there would be someone I could contact. Even PTE was easier to deal with than this when I kept blowing up their junk.

RAI isn't listed as a dealer online anymore, and I'd rather not go through them to get it inspected/sent away for repairs/whatever because it would take a year to hear anything back.

Looks like I'm going to be stuck ordering a whole new turbo to get this thing running in any sort of reasonable time.

Fuck it, might as well get a 7163.

late EDIT: If I can't get anyone to return a call or email by the end of the week I am going to go ahead and order a 7163, ... and hate/love BW.

Did you ever have the 6262 dynod? I feel like a 7163 should make way more power than 550.

Edit: I see the 6262 is old, dyno your other efr?

    Comp 6262 (700hp) is way larger than a EFR 7163 (550hp).

The two companies use different measurements to name their turbos.

Comp uses the compressor inducer and turbine exducer as their measurements for labeling.

EFR uses Compressor exducer and turbine inducer.

I never got around to dyno the 6262 when it was turned up to 36psi and running meth on a hot tune. I did get to dyno it in DD mode with a super safe tune and straight 93 pump at 28psi, 415awhp/408trq

These EFRs are pretty slick. Do they have one that moves the power band a bit more to the left?

    yeah man definitely.

    The smaller ones are wicked.

6258 spools like a K04 and can make 350ish awhp

6758, my old turbo, was very fun. It spooled like a Eliminator but was capable of 400ish awhp.

The 58mm turbine wheel units are perfect street car daily driver turbos. They have a huge compressor map and max out in the mid 20s pressure range, depending on your setup and altitude. So no need to run huge amounts of boost to make great power.

To take full advantage of the compressor maps you really do need a turbo wheel speed sensor installed along with a quality EBC or spend lots of time with your N75 maps.

The 55mm wheels are for smaller engines like the Miata's 1.6L, BW suggests the 58mm over the 55.

Does it work well with a decent mbc? I was thinking of eventually staying with 630cc uni tune and switching from eliminator to an efr 6758.

You'd probably run out of fueling with a 630 tune, but IDK for sure.

Eventually I'll post about all the BS that went into getting this thing.

the TL;DR version is that orders were placed and canceled at one place but not at another and my card ended up getting charged for a turbo amidst all of the BS. Was ready to blow a gasket over it but then it actually showed up.

The weight difference between the aluminum CHRA and iron CHRA is significant. I should have weighed both. But if I remember correctly according to BorgWarner the difference is something like 5 or 6 pounds.

    gonna drive it this evening.

6758, my old turbo, was very fun. It spooled like a Eliminator but was capable of 400ish awhp.

Honest question, are these realistic comparisons?

    Past:

    - B7 avant, 3.0t swapped
    - B8 S4, Stage 2+
    - B6 S4, not stock
    - B5 S4 Clone, built motor, 2871r

Great progress! Loving the mixed flow pics too! When do you plan on starting to tune it? I know you're starting from scratch. Have you thought about using a turbo blanket?

6258 will be slower spooling than a K04, but it's not by much. What I meant was that driving both you'd always pick the 6258 because it's so similar feeling but keeps pulling

6758 spooling like a Eliminator is no joke. I had 25psi at 4.2k with big cams and the 6758. Stock cams will spool much quicker. My 71R Eliminator had 25psi by 4k on stock cams. But the 6758 was capable of 400awhp strung out.

    Thanks man

    I'm going to start saturday.

I've been eyeballing turbo blankets, but I need to find one that will work with a IWG. I'll check out the link

Nice, should be fun. Will you start with the same base map you used for the old EFR?

As far as the blanket goes you're in luck because it's specifically designed for the IWG design!
