    Holset HY35 Question...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I hear great things about the HY35. I hear for it's size it has a pretty quick spool time. I also heard it would be a pint to do seeing that it will be a lot of custom work that would need to be done in order to make it work. My question is what do we have available to us now, that is similar in size and has good spool? My goal is 300AWHP

It's certainly been done. Well I might add

But it's not a bolt on like the Eliminator. I'm sure RedDefiance would be able to answer some questions for you.

only group of ppl i know that would suggest a 2871 is audi guys. is it a magical turbo for our application? i think its only popular for our application due to the elim kits. anyone on any other platform swears the turbo is a mismatch.

almost 20mm difference between compressor wheel and turbine wheel. thats huge

And everyone saying that has an engine bigger than 1.8L... not to mention they usually don't have jack shit done to their car other than ebay tail lights and just regurgitate some bullshit that someone they'll never even meet said on the internet

You have to take a bunch of factors into play, mostly being preference.

Obviously a 3071 is "better" than a 2871. But a 2871 will create positive pressure and peak torque before the 3071 while still flowing enough on the exhaust side for ~400hp. So according to most people the 2871 is a better "street" car daily driver turbo. Which I would be inclined to agree with, as most people don't want a powerband from 4,000 rpms and up.

I ran a Eliminator 2871 for a while. I really liked it. I ran it on a very conservative Revo tune on a stock engine and exhaust (sans test pipe) at 27psi for 6+ months before going 5857. I raced my buddies 6.0L GTO with long tubes, exhaust and dyno tune. He beat me by 2 cars at the most. So it's definitely about as fast as you're going to be able to go with limited amount of $$$$$$$ involved.

ATP now has a 3071 eliminator turbo for B5/B6 and I would be interested to see how it runs.

a mismatch turbo is a mismatch turbo, regardless the application. it has to do with the turbo wheels themselves. i am not saying it doesnt work, hell, a gt2835 works, but one hell of a mismatch.

unless atp came out with a new 3071 kit, its not a 3071. its actually a 2971, idc what they label it. i can call my car an s4, doesnt mean it is.

the 2971elim has been done on a 1.8t before. e85 w/meth, ,meastro on stock displacement aeb put down 400awhp

LOL so every fucking turbo without precisely matched turbine and compressor wheels are technically mismatched. What's your point?

some are more mismatched than others, no? dont think that makes a difference?

I just want to make a solid 300AWHP for the highway. I'm more into the "1320Video" style of racing... On the highway or from a roll. Im aware that 300AWH isn't a lot of horsepower but that's what i'm aiming for.

    same.

    what is your budget?

    stock rods?

    clutch?

I would recommend going full frame vs a eliminator only because then you have room to grow, but if you'll forever be satisfied with 300awhp, eliminator will do it.

Nitrous is a lot of fun.

I love my hy35w, there is lag of course in comparison to the tiny k03 but not bad. Being the boost onset isn't crazy it's easier on rods and clutch. I'm currently running 22psi on stock ATW with newer Valeo OE replacement clutch. I hit positive pressure at 2500rpm and full boost by 4700rpm. I got my turbo for $200, spent another $100 in ceramic coating.

Here is a video at 17psi:

Nice... But everything needs to be custom to run an HY35 is what i'm hearing. An eliminator kit everything can had off the shelf!

Look at pagparts. Near the same cost as a elim setup with much better turbo options plus the manifold shits on the elim options(i have a 2871 elim at the moment). I bought used so that's only reason I did it and it's gonna end up on my 2nd b5

I think the only reason to do an eliminator is
    a) really strict emissions or
    b) you're lazy

yes and no. 400awhp can be had from an elim setup, but full frame should make 400awhp more easily attainable. plus, with full frame you can do a sexy top mount, which is all in itself a reason for some not to go elim lol

Another option for (close to) 300 awhp is the newish Mixed Flow Frankenturbo on E85. I will be dynoing soon and will report back when I do. Without rods it may be risky, but with them I'm pretty sure it will happen.

Metalman is running the non-Mixed Flow F21 on E85 with 25 PSI. I'm pretty confident that setup, once dialed in, will break 300 awhp. I guess this post is useless if the OP doesn't have E85 available.

So this is just another option. A used 2871 may be a more budget friendly option though. I do understand that the 2871 will spank the F21 on pump gas too.

But that is only .4mm larger, so 71.4mm which would put it at 17.5mm.

my friend, you are forgetting the extended tip. that is the largest diameter of the compressor exducer. so add the other 2mm you are missing, and we are right near 20mm
