Wiring bluetooth, need a 12v source

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just bought this off ebay to add bluetooth streaming.

    http://m.ebay.com/itm/AUDI-RNS-E-Blu...501?nav=SEARCH

I didn't realize I had to wire the bluetooth to a 12v source.

    Any suggestions for this?

    Appreciate any help!

    Thanks for the tip.

Where exactly would I be tapping. Electrical is not my forte...

You want to tap into line thats being activated by ignition. Otherwise it will stay on constantly. I dont remember which one that was but just take volt meter and track it down. Or look for a diagram that will tell you which one is ignition

If you cant find them on the radio just tap into lighter power supply, its activated by ignition plus fuse is bigger on it so you wont blow it. Thats what i did for my usb charging port

Audi OE radios don't have a switched ignition feed, they only have a permanent 12V feed.

They switch on/off using messages sent over the Infotainment CAN bus.

The easiest way to get a switched 12V feed (other than routing a new wire from the fuse box) is to fit a relay with the coil controlled by the switched power out from the radio to the CD changer and the contact connected to the permanent 12V.

My suggestion would be running off the cigarette lighter power supply, or run the line to the fuse box.

The disadvantage of using an ignition feed is that you won't be able to listen to streamed music with the radio on and the ignition off (Audi radios can be turned on when the ignition is off and will stay on for 30minutes) - this is why I suggested generating a switched 12V from the CD changer power line.

You are correct, i would suggest cigarette lighter as well.

Sounds good. Now, how do I remove the lighter to wire it? Please don't tell me I have to remove the whole console...

I wouldn't (and didn't) suggest the cigarette lighter - for the same reason I already stated that you won't be able to listen to streamed music with the radio and and ignition off.

Actually the cigarette lighter always has power in Audis, at least in the 8 I've owned.

Which is also a problem - that means the Bluetooth adapter will be permanently powered and hence discharging the battery even when the car is parked up.

A permanent power source is a bad idea as it discharges the battery even when not in use, and an ignition power source stops you streaming when the ignition is off; hence a power source switched by the radio (i.e. using the CD changer power output) is the optimum solution.

You're contradicting your earlier post about being on while the ignition is off, but I understand your point.

I'm not concerned as bluetooth is a miniscule power draw. I also own a battery tender as I infrequently drive my car.

    Outstanding.

This sounds like a do-able project for me. Let me know how you come along and point out details of where you tapped for 12v.

Just purchased my 2005 S4 late last week. I have a 30-pin plug that may already go to the auxiliary source. Bluetooth would be preferable though.

That's what happens when you are old

Glad a permanent feed should work for you, but it won't for everyone.

    Good info here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...1#post11474465

    and here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...1#post11480883

The fuse I tapped into is 12v for the garage door opener and is linked to the ignition, so it only powers when the ignition is on. I used a step-down, but if you need 12v's than you cant tap right into it
