    Tranny?? God I hope not

    Hello all.

So today I was driving my car and I wanted to show my buddy the car. So I took him out and was launching and as soon as I dropped it into first gear I heard a loud bang and then when the car is in gear I hear a rattle noise and the car doesn't move at all. I suspect it's the transmission because there is a clutch master 400 fx clutch in it and I can't imagine my car has enough power to rip through it and it still shifts into gear. Lmk what you think.

So I was wondering why if it's an axel and it's all wheel drive why wouldn't I get any power from anywhere in the car? Or is it linkage between all 4 that I messed up or something? As you can see I have a limited knowledge base with a lot of stuff. But I just figure if it was a front axel I'd still get some power from the rear no?

I've broken a front axle before and can confirm the car won't go in that situation. The differential just tries to send all the power to the corner that's broken, doing nothing but spinning the broken axle.

Nope. Front and rear open diffs so all power goes to the corner with the least resistance.

Will prob kno for sure tomorrow. I'll let you know what I see. I am hoping it's only the axle and not the tranny.

    Another vote for Axle.

In the future if you preload the drivetrain a bit, it helps take some of the shock out of just dumping the clutch

I did this a few weeks ago - rear outer CV snapped and took out that corner's abs senor with it, yippie! Make sure you get OEM replacement (part out, audis4parts.com, etc.), aftermarket joints are crap

Even the ECS ones are bad? I know that the advanced auto and autozone lifetime warranty ones have issues but is ECS reliable enough?

The Ecs ones worked well for me for about 500 miles and then the boots flew apart taking my brake lines with them.. Very scary moment, luckily I wasn't in heavy traffic. Go with oem with quality boots

Axles aren't an area you want to cheap out on

Oh, and that was after trying about 3 sets of autozone/oreilis axles

As soon as one wheel stops registering
    movement the drivetrain stops sending
movement to all four. I snapped just a
front right axle and my car wouldn't move
at all. The speedo even keeps registering
speed like your moving but nothings happening.

While they are no where near the quality of OEM axles, I've had no issues with the EMPI axle I installed on the driver's side front corner for almost 20K miles.

Why would you launch in in front of your friends, just to show off?

You know that's doing alot of stress on your car, to the point where it just snaps. Was it worth it, blowing up your axle's?

I know the B5 S4/RS4 is'nt picky on launching. The complete drivetrain just bounces up and down when hard shifting. When your launching it's doing alot of stress.

Why do you have to judge/troll because even if I answered your question my axle is still broken. If I have a nice car with some serious horsepower I would like to be able to drive it. Others here have offered helpful advice and you have contributed nothing that I already didn't know.

Then why your doing it then? You could have saved the hassle / troubles for breaking an axle, lol. These cars are menth to be driven, not launch like a civic.

I don't know what's funnier, your sn being semen, or you saying launch like a civic. I've launched my car 100+ times easily...why? Because I fucking felt like it, and it's mine. Just relax kid.

Thanks to everyone. It was the rear driver side axle. I found a guy parting a car and got another OEM one.

Audi's are good for straight-forwards, hard acceleration, but launching is a complete different story.

Esp when the age hits these cars, parts are worn and can blow out anytime.

The only time my axle on my car broke, happend on a VR6 Golf when i made a small corner with not even noticable speed. It just broke and there i was standing, with no traction at all. The quattro system is great, WHEN you have traction yes. It's sick how far ESP can go when you hit grass and brakes all wheels for you just to keep the car from going out of control.
