Tire Safety. Tire pressure /Load index table

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This mostly pertains to after-market wheel/tire combos)

Fitment is one thing, but some of you forget about the other thing. Will the tires I'm using be strong enough for my car. Tire failures are commonly caused by over-loading and/or under-inflation. Please check to see if your tires are "strong" enough for your car. I've attached a load-index table to help everyone out.

    How to use:

    1. Check what the load index is on your original equipment tires. You'll be able to find this on the placard placed in between the driver's door jam.
    2. Find out what the recommended air pressure is.
    3. Cross-reference that with amount of weight that air pressure will hold.
    4. Check the load index of the tires you are using.
    5. Set air-pressure according to what the load-index table states.

Note #1. Make you check if your tires are standard-load or extra-load. Extra-load tires will say "XL" or (REINFORCED)
Note #2 If the tires you are using doesn't meet the load capacity at its maximum pressure, then your tires may fail.

I hope this helps. Be safe everyone.

Thanks Tireguy! I still can't get my arms around running 44 PSI in my Hankook Evos!

If I put the Continental Contisportcontacts on in the same size, would I be able to run less pressure?

Recommended air pressure is based on the load index of a tire. The Continentals have the same load index as the Hankook .

Is the load index advertised for new tires? I just checked the 20" 255/35ZR20 P Zeros, they didnt advertise the load index.

    Nervermind i found it... 97Y

Remember that your Pirelli has an XL rating. That means that at 35 psi, your tires carry 1385 lbs vs a standard load 97 which carries 1563 lbs.

I use 39 psi all around with my p zero... i posted this question in another forum:

"So if a 170lbs man is in the car... lets round it up to 200lbs and cars weight is: 4045lbs say 4100lbs. So a total of 4300 lbs so a total of 1100 lbs per axle should mean 97 index tires can be safely used at 27psi... doesnt make sense to me.

Let's use worst case scenario: 5 adults @ 250 each 1250lbs and weight of vehicles means each axle at 1338lbs so 97 index tires can be safely used at 35psi... "

Because the dealer always takes it to 44psi and at places they want me to use minimum 42psi on the tires... so is 39 safe or should i be using 42?

I believe my 39 falls between the recommended range from the manual.

If your tires match what is stated on your door placard, match the recommended air pressure?

Your scenario is considering only the static load condition. The recommended pressure in the manual considers not only the static load but the dynamic load condition as well. You should be fine at 39 PSI but at 42 PSI you would probably get slightly better mpg. Maintaining proper tire pressure will reward you with overall better mpg plus better tire wear and in the event of the need for an emergency maneuver the tires should not let you down.
