Should a new turbo do this?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I spun the exhaust side of my shelf unit K04 last night and noticed that the compressor scrapes against the housing. The company I bought it from says that it's normal and will be perfect once the lines and bearing(s) are filled with oil. I'm leaning towards returning it.

You're literally never going to put that turbo on, are you? I've never spun a turbo while dry, so I'm not sure. If you have that explanation from the company in writing, you can use it for backup should something fail...

Forgot to ask in the other post, but is there any shaft play at all? I've never seen one actually contact the housing, they are supposed to be tight but not that tight.

There isn't loose play in any direction, as far as free slop. More like deflection. The video was free spinning, though.

There are places where I read this is common, and other places that say it's whack.

I personally wouldn't want shards of microscopic or larger metal blown through my intercooler and engine on start up or under boost. . Wonder if there's a way to simulate the oil passage being filled without causing issues with returning it.

Sorry, the company expense policy does not allow for donuts, except for under a certain set of conditions.

    1. The meeting begins before normal working hours, that being before 8am.
    2. The meeting occurs offsite with more than three team members traveling from remote locations.
    3. Donuts can only be served in the meeting location. We have had too many electronic issues due to attempts of sending donuts through phones and video projectors.

interesting dilemma....maybe the company could send a video of them doing that same procedure to another K04 in their inventory to demonstrate that it is in fact normal...or maybe prove that its a defect for yours.

I'd get in touch with some K04 manufacturer's and ask them... CTS, APR, maybe ask FT as well. They are experts.

Before I parted out my MK2 GTi project, I had bought a brand new VW turbo off one of the euro models that had the manifold attached to the turbo itself. I bought it from a VW dealer here in Canada, and it NEVER made any noise when I free spun it. I wouldn't run that, those fins will bend for sure the first time you build boost.

Please do. I think, though, that my BW K04 has a different bearing setup than the IHI K03.

@blbroo I'm sure you've been peppering google with everything you can think of, but have you come across this?

    http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...in-freely.html

I don't have enough first hand knowledge to really be helpful, but it appears that the bearing design will have a lot to do with your impeller's dry movement. If sportec could tell you what kind of bearing you have, it would help though.

Just checked, mine seems fine. Couldn't see the compressor wheel though, and there's probably still a bit of oil left in the bearings so it's probably not much help.

That is certainly not normal at all. I think it would legit blow up if you ran any boost through it. Call the support and get a new one asap.

I haven't personally seen another good turbo do that while dry before. Not to say that it doesn't happen, but all I've played with never make housing contact.

If the bearings are oil pressure tensioned (like our timing chains) I could see how that would work, but how would the long term wear look on years of cold starts?

We are focusing on raising Gordon before we bring in another group of pups. He is 60lbs at six months and will be 125 when done growing. For now, we are supporting with decision making and vehicle maintenance. Tonight, I am swapping rotors and pads on a huge van.

The pups we get are, many times, brought to the rescue because most shelters euthanize pregnant moms due to the resources required. The rescue we work with takes them from shelters or before they get to shelters.

I'm not the driver behind volunteering, though, so I'm still cold hearted.

Oh, and Gordon isn't going anywhere, he is ours.
