    A pain in the butt..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This is going to sound strange. I purchased a 2 year old S5 after a 15 minute test drive. Since then both my wife and I have been experiencing a pain in the butt after 30 minutes of driving. On the driver's side, the pain only seems to impact the right cheek and on the passage's side the left cheek. We have now stopped using this car for trips exceeding 30 minutes as it becomes very too uncomfortable. Has anyone else experience this issue? I know it sounds crazy but if I cannot find a solution the S5 will be gone soon.

How much cash did you put down on it? I suspect your wallet got skinnier, resulting in sitting in a position that you're not used to.

On a serious note though, is it a manual? The body is a circulatory system, so a problem with your left knee brought on by using a clutch could very well be to blame for a painful butt cheek. I'm currently experiencing the same type of discomfort, but in my case it's due to old hockey injuries. The pain in my right cheek has been there for several years. Surgery is in a few weeks.

That doesnt explain the passenger discomfort though.

If you poke at the bottom cushion with your fingers are there any bumps or uneven points you can feel? If you guys are feeling it after 30 min it should be very obvious

thank you all for all the quick responses.
My wallet is always empty so that can't be it :-)
I called Audi before posting here and even though the lady in the service department was very professional, I could tell it took every muscle on her face not to burst out laughing.
The car has a DCT transmission. I played with the seat controls many time to no avail. When my wife drives the car, she experiences the pain in the same place I do.

I would go back to the dealer and drive another one and see if it feels any different .. or maybe an external seat cushion

I had the same problem with the BMW sport seats but the problem started on the outer thigh against the thigh bolsters. Right where the under thigh extender meets the seat. I hated those seats. The pain would start in the thigh and travel to your lower back after 1 hour of driving. I guess that's why Audi has the comfort seats.

Get one of those 'bead' type car seat covers and just see if it stops it. Or try a pillow.

Thank you all for your help, greatly appreciated. I am going to try an air pillow that I use for long motorcycle rides and see if that helps. It is a shame as I do love this car.

guys, WAT,...srsly this is a visit to an MRI and an orthopedic surgeon. that's likely your spinal cord, sciatic nerve or disks causing issues on the easiest side of things. (try adjusting the lumbar to nill, or all the way)

How much do you weigh? Are you overweight? My dress pants always rip when I get into my car. The car has a very awkward entrance, but I love the seats.

I have to tilt my head when I get in, otherwise I bang my head on the roof. Getting in and out of cars with big bolsters is something I'm used to, but it's certainly a lot more difficult to get into a bolstered car than a normal car.

I'm still very surprised by this post. A lot of my back problems have become far less noticeable since I got my Audi. My STI was destroying my back.

I have noticed that on longer drives my lower back does start to hurt. I may need to fiddle with the seat controls. My fat ass doesn't fit nicely in it maybe. Just feels like im slumped over or something I dunno.

If you feel slumped over try tilting the bottom of the seat. I find that if the front of the seat base sits higher than the rear of the seat base, it takes a lot of strain off of my back. Some people really like the base of the seat entirely flat, but I've never been one to find that comfortable since it feels like I'm tilted forward.

Any chance you're leaving your wallet in your back pocket? When I drive 3+ hours, my whole ass goes numb and then my back starts to hurt if I leave my wallet back there...

Mine was a 2004, and they had notoriously shitty, loud suspension. The seat itself was comfortable, even far more comfortable than my Evo seats are, but the suspension was a killer. I had that car for 9 years, too, so the back problems I already had only got worse during that entire period.

Maybe try it with the lumbar totally out of the picture, or even just lowering the depth of the lumbar? Everyone's issues are going to vary, obviously, but in my case the lumbar usually makes things worse. If I do use my lumbar it's usually just for a few minutes to get a good stretch in, then I retract it all the way again. Have you tried adjusting the leg bar to help?

I feel old, and I'm really not that old. The injuries from all of the sports and random stupid things I did as a kid started to catch up to me in my mid 20's. Once you hit 30, the problems just hit you like a ton of bricks.

HazeMyth... Wait until you hit 50....!!!!

Weird, but I also found the all leather S5 seats too firm for my liking last year. I shopped forever to try and find a used S5 with the Alcantara inserts. After I took delivery of my specially ordered A5, (last April) I ended up with about 6 different S5's optioned the way I wanted by the end of June (most coming off lease programs).

As much as I'm not looking forward to 50 at all, I think I might actually be in less pain by the time I'm 50. I've spent most of my adult life to this point getting old injuries fixed and properly rehabilitating them. I actually feel better these days than I ever did in my early 20's, and I'm hoping I'll feel like a million bucks after I get my other knee fixed finally this May.

Yep, I can agree with that. It's hard to hit the sweet spot with the leg bar. I hit a sweet spot after excessively messing around, and then my wife drove the car once and pushed the bar all the way back in. I can't seem to find the sweet spot again.

I ripped at least 3 pair of paints getting into my A5 (lowered, stock height, adjusting wheel, it didn't matter)...The seats are comfortable enough to drive to Vegas (Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours)

But to San Francisco (5.5 to 6 hours) becomes a little unbearable for the lower back. Maybe Turn on your seat warmers along with the AC?

How much do you weigh? Are you overweight? My dress pants always rip when I get into my car. The car has a very awkward entrance, but I love the seats.
I've ripped a pair of pants getting in as well. Jeans none the less. LOL

Had comfort seats so I still retain my butt pain virginity.

+1. The S5 sport seats are very comfy especially when you've got it set-up properly. I have no problems with comfort and I find it more comfy than my VW GTI cloth sport seats. I suggest consulting a Chiropractor or Ortho Doctor and find out if you have any existing back or butt issues that get aggravated because you're sitting in a low slung sport seat. If your body is not used to sitting in a sport seat for any amount of time, those aches and pains will rear their ugly head.

I don't believe I am experiencing back issues. My previous car was a Subaru STI, much harder seats than the S5 and no issues and I drive my wife Hyundai all the time, no issues there either. I also ride motorcycles several times a week, if I was experiencing a back issue, I am sure the bikes would make it very evident. It is possible the S5 seats are just not the right fit for me.

Here's an idea for you to consider: Test drive an A5 with the regular and S-Line seats and see how they treat your butt. If you find those seats comfy, maybe you can consider swapping your S5 sport seats for the A5 seat style that works for you. There's a lot of A5 owners who would be glad to swap out their regular or S-Line seats for the S5 seats.
