in tribute to the V8 S4's intake manifold

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

the B6/B7 S4's intake manifold is nearly 1/4 the volume of the entire engine.

after removing the fuel rail, fourteen bolts, and every last vacuum line and connector, lifting out this massive component makes me feel like Rictus Erectus ripping a supercharger off the War Rig.

it's the size of a small 4-cylinder engine block.

it contains as much aluminum as Uruguay's air force.

looking in the intake at full throttle may alert Sauron to your presence.

    Lolz, great post.

However, I believe the manifold is made of magnesium.

yow, that's much further than i've ever had to go! was there something specific you had to remove the lock carrier & radiators for, or did you do it to make the belt work easier?

Initially I just wanted to fix my intake flapper, but it quickly evolved into doing more preventative maintenance; oil check valves, valve cover gaskets, auto tensioner, LW crank and belt. So yeah, mainly removed it to make my life a little easier. I could have gotten away with leaving the carrier on, but that was allowed me to do some serious cleaning.

Of course, its an alloy. Pure magnesium is rarely used in anything.

What were you welding it for on your turbo beast?

oh, jeeze, coolant hoses can be the worst. i had a very tricky time getting the hose off the thermostat housing between it sticking and the limited clearance. it was a delicate process of prying a bit away with a hose pick and then injecting some silicone oil to penetrate. it was touchy, but the hose came off intact (i probably scratched up the thermostat housing more).
