B5 RS4 back from the dead

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

I have owned my B5 RS4 for about a year, its an 80k mile car.

However I recently decided to break it up for parts (keeping the shell and some choice parts for the future - as these are going up in value) one of the main reasons for doing it was my mk2 golf 4wd project i need to finish

so the RS4 now looks like this

recently i bought an Audi C5 S6 with a goosed auto gearbox, i was going to do a manual gearbox swap with a C5 2.7t 6 speed manual car i have but the bodywork on the S6 isnt up to standard, so i have decided to drop the 4.2 V8 in the RS4 and get back on the road (madness i know)

Eventually get an S6 bottom end built with forged rods and low comp pistons and single turbo it - i already have a spare S6 block, crank and sump so its just the uprated oparts ill need for a forged bottom end.

Once i get started on the project ill post more pics - sorry if its in the wring section, im new here (mods/admin feel free to relocate the thread)

    Thanks

it seems a strange one going from 460hp to 340hp - with a better soundtrack though, but once its got a turbo on it it will be back up to decent power and more.

1st job to get it rebuilt and running with a stock S6 and get back driving it

It should be a great build. It's just over here a B5 RS4 is our unicorn, you never kill a unicorn man haha. But I'll definitely be paying attention.

i know, its not like there are many left over here too.

A friend of mine has one and he has had his engine out twice in 4000 miles changing turbos, so whilst the engines are great when they work they are money pits when there are not.

At least this way its still an Audi engine going in, i was going to put an LS v8 and rear wheel drive - maybe a step too far away for a quattro based car

Haha yes same old story :D
It is a nice colour, but almost every rs4 you see is Avus.
But the colour won't matter for this build, will be unique enough when you're done!

You should paint it cactus green tho

I'd be a lot more sad about this if the steering wheel were on the correct side. Things being as they are, good luck and post videos when the turbo is in!

little update, ive started putting the trims back in to the car, reinstalled the brake servo and clutch master, dash in etc.

Biggest update was i got the engine out of the S6, the gearbox out of the A6 2.7 bi turbo, removed the torque converter and flywheel, bolted them together and fitted the engine, clearly it needs to come out again but i need to get it all sorted regards the front panel modification to accept the rads etc

but it feels like im getting somewhere now i technically have a car with an engine (even if it would never drive as it is)

yes i kept all the panels, steering rack, most interior trims, loom, headlining etc, window regulators, door catches etc, lots of parts really.

The car owes me about £2500 less than i paid for it, once the car is back on the road i think it will owes me less than an average S4 over here in the UK (about £4,000)

far enough forward that the pulleys on the front of the engine come past the ends of the chassis legs - hence needing to modify the front panel to cut out the fan housings to clear the pulleys etc, i never measured it as i knew it would fit with a bit of messing around at the front end.

Damn this is such an epic thread. Parting out an RS4 B5, and now putting it back together.

Just a personal question, but is'nt getting all those parts back way more then just buying a used RS4 B5?

if you paid RS4 'tax' on the things that need replacing it would cost more than i made back id say.

I bought the car for £11,500 last year, broke the car for (so far) £15,500 and kept quite a bit - for example i so far have nearly £6,000 from the engine bay that i wouldnt even need for the v8 swap.

Just a couple of little examples, i couldnt sell a front subframe from a A6 2.7tt for £30, i sold the RS4 one in a day for just over £100 - they are identical, my RS4 now has a subframe from an A6 i broke.

sold the rear end, uprights, wishbones, arms, subframe for the same money i can buy a complete A4 quattro for use that back end (as they are identical) then sell the rest of the car for a profit making the new back end free - good old man maths in use

So when the RS4 comes back on the road with the V8 it will owe me about £4,000 - less than a semi decent S4 and a whole lot more a better car.

not sure if that helps get your head around it, i keep looking at what i am left with (still have a few thousand to sell too) and the spreadsheet detailing the sold amount and cant quite believe it myself.

I would have scrapped the dime a dozen mk2 as its nothing to write home about. This thread makes me glad my parents left the uk and i didnt grow up there.

Thats awesome. Fyi the C5 2.7t allroad belly pan is a direct bolt on, easily 3x thicker than at least the s4 part, and has more + larger naca ducts. I got mine from a dead allroad for $30 (£22).

do you know what clutch/fly wheel set up you are using? I used an rs4 set up which needed the stock trans spacer which didn't help with the motor sticking out further. I know guys that use different clutch and don't need to use the spacer and are even able to run a fan between the motor and rad. I have no idea how they pulled that one off

interior virtually all back in including Alcantara headlining, pillars and visors (trimmed by myself)

rear end being built up with new bushes and will soon be bolted up then its new front arms, fit the new coilovers and put it on its new wheels, rear big disc conversion 330mm discs almost done, front porsche 996 turbo caliper brackets to be made, then i can fit the front brakes

so lots done, but nothing that means an engine can fire up yet

    little update

most of the panels are back on the car, rear end all refreshed and back on its new back wheels, front will be done shortly.

Interior getting there, i mentioned the Alcantara headlining was done, i have also trimmed the dashboard too, the interior fitted pictures were taken with a flash so the material has come out lightr than it actually is in real life.
