Corrosion and rust on my cpo '13

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've had my 2013 for about a month now and the dealership has been chasing a rattle that I've recorded on several occasions with no luck. This weekend, I manage to squeeze under the car to have a look myself, and was a little surprised to see rust and corrosion in various spots.

Any opinions or suggestions on these pics? Something like this covered by warranty?

Sorry on mobile so here is album on one drive.

You thought you got a new car or what??? Your car is at least 3 years old.... Corrosion under the car is common and normal unless your car never sees any rain or snow!

Body has a 10 year warranty against corrosion. Not sure about the rest. Wouldn't hurt to run it by the dealer

Edit: just saw the pics, for 3 years old that seems a bit excessive

We have a 12 years warranty against perforation, not corrosion. These will never go to that point, at least not within 12 years. It's totally normal to have surface corrosion like that under the car. You guys would cry your entire life if you had a look at my car. Even worse was my B7 after 8 years of rain, winter, and road shit...

Which dealership in CT are you going to? They vary considerably... PM me if you don't want to air the name publicly.

The vehicle came from Wisconsin and has about 48k miles. Having lived in CT and owning a Jeep, I know all about the cancer that rust is. Treating it early is key. I was just surprised to see it on an Audi that was 3 years old.

Thanks to for clarifying that the warranty is for perforation and not so much surface rust or corrosion, however I disagree that left unchecked, this would perforate inside the 12 year warranty. Anyway, I aim to avoid the IF there. That's why I was curious if this was common enough and really whether the dealer would do something now rather than something potentially more costly 9 years from now. On my jeep, where fighting frame rote etc was a constant battle, i was a big fan of Easton's internal frame coat and rust inhibitor and Fluid Film, along with standard wire wheeling and POR 15.

It's Hoffman. They've been good to deal so no complaints, and solved a few minor issues except for the rattle. I showed some of the videos I had taken to the service manager and recognized that something was going on but it is intermittent. I really didn't want to pile on the complaints with this rust issue, and be that buyer of a used car complaining that it wasn't spotless 'new.'

    I appreciate the replies! Thanks.

Now off mobile so here are some of the worst pics:

That is normal for the steel sub-frames....which are NOT galvanized (unlike the rest of the cars steel sheetmetal). I think Audi could spring for the extra $10 and galvanize these parts too.....

I know when I lived in an area that snowed and where put salt down, I washed the car once a week. I have very little rust but I would try that after they fix the corrosion...

I brush this stuff on once a year or so.

The dealer is not going to fix this....

My 2008 B7 was way worse than your car when I got it CPO in 2012 and the corrosion barely evolved in 4 years of ownership and 80000 km of road, at leat 50% of it in harsh Quebec winters. These pieces are very thick and it would take many years (12+ unless you have some damage) to get to a point where it would literally eat through it. Of course, this isn't nice to look at... But it's just normal. The dealer will do nothing about that under warranty, nor will Audi. You can of course (and probably will) not take my word for it and ask your dealer and even complain to Audi if you want.

That being said, they could probably do something about it at the factory, like use galvanized steal. Maybe...

Does that second pic show a rusted out hole? If so, that is unacceptable to me, I'd focus on that for sure

Hoffman is one of the better ones. Fairfield has been essentially flawless in my experience. The rust under your car seems normal, but you could probably use something like POR15 if it concerns you.

Good to see more members in CT, hopefully you can make it out to a meet sometime soon!

Thanks. My wife said I'm a nerd but a meet up sounds good now that warmer days are here. Also looking to chip my a4 at some point and have done some basic mods with carista app and Bluetooth obd.

My girlfriend says the same thing, but there are enough of us that we can nerd out every once in a while:

Had a meetup before Caffeine and Carburetors just yesterday. There's another one in May and we'll do the same thing.
