Okay cool, just didn't want you to take what I said the wrong way. I agree that weather plays a huge role in power output.

I would talk to Darryl over at HPA, I got a better deal on this then even the lowest price on the JHM turbo, I don't want to disclose actual prices but he hooked me up. Also the shop quoted me a little more then I was expecting just because this will be the first HPA turbo he's done on a b8, but if it goes as easy as the APR k04's he's done he will discount the price back down, I'll let you know.

The HPA is nowhere near as easy to install as the APR.

They have a new kit now, the old one was different the new one can be mounted up with any HFC, and is direct fitment. They just changed it last month.

Finally I get to join this club!

My shop finished up the JHM turbo install this morning. It was pretty straight forward, except some mixup with switching the coolant port plug over to the other port. They stripped the plug when trying to remove it and we had to wait for another plug.

I just got home from getting the APR tune and only had a chance to drive about 20 miles in 92 degree heat.

Car pulls hard all the way to redline, and sounds a lot meaner. Love the turbo spool sound, much better than K03.

It was 92 degrees outside and I still have PFR7 plugs @ 0.032 gap. I think that needs to change ASAP for a smoother 4000 rpm and up. I can feel a couple hiccups and timing pull at high RPM, same thing I felt when I ran colder plugs on the K03. I do not attribute this to the tune/turbo at all. But give me a few more days to really get used to it.

    So far, loving it....

What plugs are you going to use? My place is recommending NGK BKR8EIX gapped to .024.

Yea that is what is on the APR website as their recommendation. I will probably run those but at 0.026 or 0.028 with the R8 coils.

I asked Daryl the same question and he told me they designed their K04 for stock plugs.

I am currently running NGK7 (holdover from my stage 2 setup) but I have a set of 8's that APR recommends for their K04 kit.

So basically just adding some additional confusion to the thread in hopes someone has a better answer.

I'll keep my other plugs just in case, I'm switching to the 8's and r8 coils.

When I had my car tuned they switched out my Bkr8eix to the stock heat range plug. Now my car was experiencing a lot misfires during the tune, most likely due to my car needing a carbon clean. The tuner at Force Fed added for a street car without major engine work the stock heat range works fine. I think they put in bkr6e gapped at .022 to deal with the misfires. I have about 3k on plugs now and about to excise said carbon this weekend. I will probably order a set the same the tuner installed as well as a stock 7 heat range platinum.

One would think the tune has more to do with the plugs than the design of the k04 kit. Perhaps I'm wrong.

That's what I was thinking, since I'm going with APR's tune I figured I should go with what they recommend.

Most folks with those kits will have trouble with the IC piping connection from what I recall. And the coolant line angles. Some shops can fabricate solutions easily.

I have the ecode silicone hoses and they never brought up any issues. But i agree it probably depends on the shop you take it to.

For Those running a CTS BW k04, Do you need to buy their test pipe/HFC or will any HFC, Like 034, work?
CTS told me I have to buy theirs, which I don't believe.

i believe it is because they use a true k04 and the outlet flange is different. old hpa kit had the same requirement for the same reason i believe

no but based on some of the data it would seem the cts k04 makes the most power being a bigger turbo compared to the hybrids.

It's not... at least compared to ours (which isn't a hybrid either).

didn't mean to imply your turbo was a hybrid or not was just commenting on price difference question.

I would like to know this as well. The main reason I went with HPA was 1. Cost, 2. They didn't oversell me, they told the truth about their product (it's a hybrid) and didn't bash any other company. Even if JHM doesn't consider their turbo a hybrid it's still not a true BW K04 so at that point I think you just call it their own manufactured turbo.

I did my own install with the DIY write up in here. No pictures just reading it. I'm no mechanic but I did it. Also have the APR tune done at Brink Motorsports in Austin, TX. You will enjoy the extra power. I don't have dyno numbers but a big difference. I still have a stock IC but will upgrade soon.

    No need to fab anything

I'll be happy to answer any questions on the install of the HPA kit.

I think the term hybrid would generally mean something along the lines of taking a k03 and modifying it to take a K04 compressor wheel thus making a hybrid k04. Vs being a true K04 and modifying it. So jhms would not be a hybrid but rather an enhanced k04.

So APRs kit would be a hybrid. I think the only true BW K04 is the cts kit. JHM may have a K04 but it's their own made it's not a BW. So how do you know it functions as such. I think they all will do their job.

I see. I overlooked that. I had thought I saw jhm's started as a BW K04 but now that I look at their site it just references K04.
