Free permanent fix for broken cup holders

Hey guys, I fixed my cup holder today with a simple free solution I haven't seen yet so I thought I should post it up.

I have some crappy pictures of it finished and an even crappier drawing. Sorry, it didn't occur to me to post this until after I was done.

The constant tension spring breaks free from the thin plastic slot it resides in and rolls up like an old window shade from looney tunes. I simply removed the flat clear plastic bit that sent light to the front of the cup holder and bent the end of the spring down at a 90 degree angle. I then hooked the end of the spring under the fatter plastic beneath where it would normally go. It looks just like a tape-measure.

So you lose the light, but you gain a cup holder.

Here you can see the thin broken slot where the end of the spring used to reside. Notice how the end of the spring is now tilted down at a 90 degree angle and hooked onto the end like a tape-measure.

    Nice find.

If you don't mess with trying to fix, I have a tip for you. Buy an a6 cupholder since the sell for $20 on eBay. Then remove the s4 face and put it on the a6. Presto chango cheapo!

I can't imagine that those are designed any differently. Talk about poor engineering.

What I meant to add was that the issue identified by the OP is not always the problem or at least wasn't for my last two s4s. Both of them actually cracked where the cup holder comes out.

So, the fix all is to buy a cheap one and replace the front face. If you buy as s4 part you'll spend 50-60 even in the wanted ads.
