    Mirror cap replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
While doing a quick detail on my baby today I found a nice, deep scratch in my passenger side mirror cover. I just ordered a new one from Genuine Audi Parts which should be here next week. Has anyone here had to replace the mirror cover on the SQ and if so, is there a trick to removing the glass without breaking it to bits? I've found some videos online for other models and it doesn't look that difficult but I'm a little concerned about removing the glass itself.

Usually the glass on these mirrors just pops out. Turning it all the way to one side and up/down will usually reveal enough of a corner to pull it out. After that, should be held together with screws.

Driver or passenger? Driver mirror has soldered points and can only be removed from the harness not from the mirror itself. Makes it a little trickier, but again no biggie. It does take a decent amount of up force to get the housing off though, so don't be afraid.

Definitely just point the mirror all the way down and from the top of the mirror push downward and it'll just come right off.

Passenger side. Luckily it happened on something easily replaceable but it still hurt a little inside.

Most of the Audi videos on youtube show removing screws once you get the mirror out to remove the cap. There are No screws on the SQ5 mirror caps to remove. The cap is just clipped on. I found it easiest to start at the bottom of the cap on the inside of the housing, then the corner furthest from the car should unclip and then work your way around to the corner closest to the car.

Although little more coordination you can also replace the housing without disconnecting the mirror. Unclip the mirror and use painters tape to tape it to the car window. Unclip the housing and then pass the mirror through.

just a thought but have you ever just thought about wrapping it in vinyl? probably a lot cheaper than a new cover. Also i am ibis and you are glacier and getting it wrapped in gloss black to match the optics package, will make it stand out. If you have silver covers then a new cover is the way to go IMHO

I do not have the black optics package and I personally like the matte silver mirror caps. I thought about wrapping them but in the end decided that I'd rather just replace it and keep it stock. To be honest with you, replacing it is just my way of being really anal as I'm sure I'd forget about it once I got over the initial shock. It's not even that bad really but as an owner you tend to notice every little thing on your car.

I was walking by my car too close and put a deep, but narrow, 1.5"-2" scratch in the front fender with the clip on the knife in my pocket. It is down to primer or bare metal. I was sick for a good 48 hours.

OP, don't mean to thread jack. Can you link the vid you saw? I have a set of alum mirror caps I want to put on.

I assumed the same but the only part that is similar is taking the mirror out. There are no screws to remove and the mirror internals (plugs etc.) are different. Once the mirror is out and disconnected just wrestle the cap off and disconnect the side assist and blinker. Swap the blinker and side assist to the new cap and then reassemble.

It is pretty easy, just like most things on modern cars, you have to remain calm when it feels like your going to brake 1500 little plastic clips every time you do something.
using at least 3 fingers, (no jokes) pop off the mirror from the outside edge. Remove the wires from the back of the glass. The driver side on mine was a real bish. Take your time and wiggle.
Then remove two screws from the bottom of the inner shell that go into lower cover. From there, this is where it gets snack, crackle, poppy. I used plastic pry tools and went under the signal light on the mirror, pushing the lower cap down, while pulling the upper cap up and out with my hands. Started from the inside of the mirror (closest to car) and then worked my way out. Pop pop pop pop bingo.
    Not to bad.

Google ECS AUDI B8 Mirror cap install.
Not the exact same, but pretty darn close.

I don't have side assist, but I only had to remove one screw. It was the one holding the turn signal onto the shell. You don't have to remove the screws on the bottom. The following link has the proper instructions on how to remove the cap.
