    Sloppy shifter ball be gone!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Picked up one of those 3d printer contraptions and been looking for something to make with it.
CJ_ hooked me up with a worn out shifter to play around with (thanks again man ) http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...1#post11411195

Built this up, but dont have any late style cars to put it in

My early style wasnt too bad, but drew up another and put this in

It actually firmed it up quite a bit! I never noticed any slop in the throws, but could feel a little if I pulled up on the shifter before. Zero play now.
Seems to be fine so far, have to see how she holds up.

I have to make a few for buddies first, but might make a few extra. I think its about 3hrs print time/set.

For sure! Getting close to mandatory with how inexpensive they are nowadays.
Ive only had the thing for like 2 weeks and made all sorts of b5s4 parts- headlight repair tabs, shifter balls, spider hose fittings, fkn plastic screw clips.

They prob just dont know how to use it, mine was only $240 to the door. It did take some tinkering to get it dialed in though.

Any chance you could share the specific 3D printer model you're using? As you may recall I'm somewhat of a tinkerer

    Nice work!

Was this ABS or PLA? And what printer were you using?

I haven't made anything beyond vent gauge pods and cookie cutters lol Keep tinkering and posting!!!!

Very cool zillarob good job! How difficult is it to make parts such as these wih the 3d printer software? Saw a dremel/hp 3d printer at best buy the other day and thought it would be really fun to play with and make some parts with, but have zero experience using one.

This is the one I got https://www.3dprintersonlinestore.co...3d-printer-kit
If you get one, dont pay for any of the upgrades. There are better/less $$ options out there and you will have a better idea of what you want/need after a week or two of goofing around with it.

Still running the pla that came with it. Have some abs sitting here so will move to that soon, then try out nylon. Have new 1.75 and 3mm extruders waiting at the post office.

Difficulty is tough to say. I have only had this thing for 2wks and pretty much zero 3d modeling experience.
The printer prob prints like shit out of the box. It it kind of a diy erector set and there are a few areas that need some tlc. I kinda like that it needed some tinkering/tuning.
The main prob is the way they setup the axles for the v-rollers- they use split lock washers so you can adjust the tension on the bearings. This is bogus. These are not flat so a few trips to Lowes for some flat washers got it both tight and rolling smoothly.

My guess is the modeling will prob be the hard part for many people.
Lots of software out there, free and paid. The important part is to find one that jives in your head.
Kinda like pc/mac, they both do the same fkn thing, but one or the other may just click a little easier for you.
Youtube vids have pretty much gotten me to where I am now. There are tons of them.

This is one of the headlight fixers

ABS + high heat = melt. good for prototyping but not long term IMO.

The Tg of abs is around 80C to 100C, that will be fine for the headlights. I printed abs brackets for the mini h1's projects 2 years ago and no issues.

The drainpipe in any house made since the 80's is ABS plastic and hot water flows through it all the time, I don't see any cause for alarm.

Theres a difference between a solid molded piece of ABS plastic and a piece of ABS made from layers. Not all ABS is created equal, some variants will have glass added for strength for example. I'm not discounting what zillarob is doing. I'm just saying depending on what layer heights / fill percentages / fill styles used on the prints it may not hold up as well in harsh environments. I work closely with the rapid prototyping industry for living.

There is nothing wrong w/ 3D printing for mock up purposes / proof on concept, but for something to be used in a long term environment I'd want something a little more durable.

-edit- with that being said, zilla if you need help modeling anything shoot me a PM, its the least i can do in return for all the help youve given me on here.

3D printed parts do not hold up. Period. Especially for something like the shifter ball.

    Def will!!
Been pretty lucky at picking it up so far from youtube vids. Everything is fully defined and kinda enjoy the order of operations chess game you play to not draw yourself into a corner.

The compound curves/surfaces are next on the list, but might be tough.
Well defined straight lines, squares, rectangles, circles, and arcs make sense to me.
The artsy random splines in sweeps and lofts just dont jive in my brain. Maybe ocd or something, but they currently give my head the bsod

Feel free to shoot me a message if you need any CAD modeling help. Also, what's the max size part dimensions that you can print (LxWxH)?

    The site shows 200 x 200 x 200 mm, or about 8" cube. Decent size for such a low-cost 3D printer.

In fact I'm attempting to get my wife on-board with the idea of buying this. I do lots of CAD by day (Solidworks) so the "hard part" is already covered.

Also zillarob, other reviews I'm seeing mention the tinkering required to get this thing set up properly. Really appreciate you sharing all this info with us!

Yeah I run Solidworks 2014 6-8hrs a day so it's second nature to model anything. 8^3 inches is great. I know what I'm telling the wife I want for Xmas this year :)

If you are the techy diy type, you need one of these contraptions!!

I didnt really get it to melt plastic, I wanted to learn more about the software, electronics, mechanics, and cnc aspects of it.
Most of this stuff is very similar, if not exactly the same. Printing parts is just a bonus.

Has been a ton of fun and learned so much already. Trying to talk my buddy into letting his kid build a 12^3 Wilson 2 for bigger stuff.

I'm digging myself into a 3D-printing hole thanks to you zillarob.

Been thinking about a shift knob... came across an idea to incorporate a small vibrating motor (such as from an Xbox controller) to use as haptic feedback used as a suggestion for when to shift [instead of a shift light]. Pair that with an Arduino and some code and you're looking at something pretty sweet.
Can even incorporate a small single-digit LCD display on the top of the shift knob to display gear selection; this of course adds more complexity but could work with the same Arduino.

I didnt realize you could buy them from audi without buying the whole dang tranny

The first one I did is pretty much a direct copy of the stock ball and has the pockets. Was just modeling practice.
Those pockets are on the not-so-load-bearing side to side surfaces and prob only there to save nylon when they cast it.
You dont need to do this when 3d printing because it prints a honeycomb inside as it goes. My later drawings are full sphere.
There are some small lines around it from the layers that I think will hold grease just fine.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

Its one hell of a rabbit hole, sounds like you are well on your way

The ones in the pics would work with that.
I have been thinking about making another solid 2 piece one also.

I needs pleeze! Can't remember which side right now, but I'm missing one of those locator tab/balls. The tiny jiggle in the headlight is infuriating.
