    Audi Allroad C5 Double Rims

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

Could any member please advise me how the Audi Double Spoke rims are constructed?

It appears as though the outer spoke assembly is bolted to the inner part of the wheel using ten double hex bolts around the perimeter and another ten bolts around the center of the rim.

I have not attempted to undo these bolts in case they are merely decorative. It would certainly make it easier to repaint and polish the rims if the outer rim can be separated from the inner rim.

I just see these for the first time the other day.
Definetly cool construction; don't know anything about them in particular.
    How much do they weigh?

They're genuine two piece and removable. They're somewhat heavy for 17s, they're somewhere just under 30lbs. 28/29 IIRC?

as 4 rings said, they just unbolt, however, be prepared for a stripped bolt! I tried my best and I still ended up messing up about 4. They are made of titanium not steel. I replaced with stainless hex heads so they all matched after I refinished my wheels. Had to re tap every hole for the stainless bolts.

Mine came out perfect with little trouble. I suggest loc tite when RE assembling.

Be weary of torque when putting the bolts back in. I didn't strip any on removal but when I put one on I spun the head right off. I ended up removing and leaving them off. I think they look pretty sick with no face and I never had an issue without the faces I ran them for like 1500 miles before I put her away and picked up a b8.

    Good luck!

What was your process here? Did you primer, base, clear? Did you use a spray gun or cans?

There's technically no torque spec since Audi says do not take them off. If I were to do it I would do like 80lb-in/9Nm, something real light, and check them after some driving.

    I power coated the rims.

As for torque, I used blue lock tight and snugged them up well. Probably close to what was stated above.

Why did you have to re-tap the holes? Did you do it just so the threads were clean or did you change the thread to accommodate the different thread bolts? Couldnt you have gotten the same thread bolt, I assume it was metric..

If you have them powdered, the powder with get sucked onto, and into, every part of the wheel. You will have to tap the threads to remove the powder. Good idea to clean up the bolts as well. You don't want to cross thread them, and you want a good, clean surface for new Loctite.

I did re-tap for the above reason and I also put in 1/4-20 stainless cap bolts rather than trying to source metric.

    Bump ... Bump :-)

I just completed refinishing my 2 piece wheels for my 2005 allroad. (1) First rule on this.. If you can't dedicate 1 week minimum to do this do not attempt.
So the 80 bolts were blue loctite. It took me over 1 hour to dismantle the four wheels. Breaking each bolt free is stressful. They released with no issues. ( But I bought this 05 from a lady who had it serviced more than it needed & always garaged ).
I stripped the wheels using 150 to 400 grit wet dry papper. Used orbital sander, wire wheels & small paint stripping pads. This prep will take the most time & will be the most important part on how the wheels appear once completely done. Don't skimp & short cut.

I refinished them in Duplicolor black chrome wheel refinishing kits ..... Hummm, here's the caveat. Since I did not completely strip the wheels to bare magnesium I had to use etching primer... ( Black Chrome paint should only be done over a polished aluminum or chrome... ) In my case once I applied the black chrome base, the wheels turned out Green ... Not what I wanted. So stripped the first wheel & then still used etching primer, but spread Duplicolor silver metallic wheel paint over the primer. Then I used the black chrome base paint. The number of light coats dictate how dark the base coat will be... Make sure you use the same number of coats on each wheel. Or they'll be different. Then I used 3 coats of the clear topcoats. allow 2-3 days minimum for the pint to cure on the wheels before reassembling.

I will update with pictures @ a later time ...

&& Those titanium bolts are no longer available to be ordered from the dealership ( This was what I was told. ).

True dedication! I may have stripped em with aluminum brightener from napa and then rattle canned em w/o removing the outer piece.

I wanna see pics! I always liked my double spokes

also interested, as mine are pretty scratched upand could use a refinish even if it doesn't involve splitting the pieces
It's to the point where all the problems just run together in a spider web of disappointment and mush.

Still putting the 05 allroad back together. Decided to do rotors/pads, repaint calipers, oil & filter change, transmission fluid /gasket /filter, sprkplugs, repaint Y pipe. New brake lines except the hard lines are fighting me so that is today's challenge. & coolant flush for new G12... Last but not least I will wrap the chrome surrounds, exterior review mirror covers with 3M 4D carbon fiber vinyl wrap.
