Some questions about the SQ5 I just bought...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just picked up a Monsoon Gray 2014 SQ5 last night. CPO with 15k miles. Absolutely loving it so far! Prior to this I've owned both an A3 and an A4.

I have some questions and would appreciate some input from you all. Feel free to answer any or all of them...

    1. Audi Connect… I just ordered a prepaid t-mobile SIM (on special for $5). Should arrive next week. T-mobile provides 200MB of free LTE data per month, and reduces speeds to 2G after that. Does anyone use this plan? I'm wondering if the 200MB will be enough for me to exclusively use Google Maps or if I'll need more data. I drive all over San Diego county for work, but rarely outside of this city. I'm thinking it once everything gets cached I’ll be good to go.

    2. Audi Connect… I have calendar appointments on a google calendar and/or iCloud. I’d love to get in my car and have it already know where I’m headed next based on my calendar. I know you can send addresses via the Audi app or from Google’s “send to car” feature. Is anyone currently automating this in any way? Would love to hear any ideas.

    3. I will be storing some medical equipment in the cargo area. I’d like to prevent the trunk from getting scratched up by my hard plastic bins. I’d like to put a protective coating of some sort on the inside part of the hatch (see photo below for the exact area). Two ideas have come to mind so far, a clear 3M wrap of sorts, or spraying a black plastidip coating? I’d like the solution to prevent scratches and also cause no long term damage to the car and be easily reversible back to normal.

    4. MMI Update. I think it requires a special CD or software. I can post a photo of my version tomorrow, but has anyone had success updating these?

    5. Vag Com… I tried searching but couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. Is there a list of all the possible codes/ modifications that can be done on an SQ5? I want to determine if it’s worth buying a Vag Com or not.

    Here's a photo of it!

I think that’s it for now. Thanks everyone!!

As far as protection goes in the back it might be worth a call to price that panel you expect will get thrashed and if it's say $60-80 then just replace it if it gets damaged later. Or maybe something like Velcro adhesive strips to hold a 1/4" thick foam insulation type of something in place.. Be creative at Home Depot.

You bring up a good point, may just be less hassle to replace it down the road. Though I am guessing it'll end up costing ~$200 to replace or $40-50 to protect it. Not worth a ton of hassle but I also it to look nice and clean.

Also, your link isn't working for me...

    Congrats on your new SQ5!

Why not drape an old blanket or drop sheet over your plastic bins and strap them down using bungee cord and the tie down rings. Those bins won't slide around. If they did, the blanket or drop sheet will be the buffer between your tail-gate's plastic trim pieces and your bin's edges. Just an idea.

Beat me to the punch. This is a great idea and will save you from having to replace any interior pieces due to damage.

    1. I've read that T-Mo terminates the free 200MB if they detect that you are not using it on a tablet device. With Google Earth turned on, I use between 100 and 500MB depending on where I go. The satellite images do get cached, but only for a limited region and if you use auto zoom like I do, then it has to load them at different zoom levels. I use AT&T instead of T-Mobile. The car is on my shared data plan for $10/month.

    2. Not aware of anything that lets you do that. I'm sure you know that you can send the calendar appointment from the Audi app to the car, but you have to do it one by one.

    4. Are you talking about Map or firmware update? The latest firmware that a dealer can update to is K0814. It's what I'm running. I got my firmware updated regularly by my dealer. Maps are a different story. It costs about $400 to update the maps and it can only be done by a dealer.

I use a furniture blanket folded in four. Fits pretty good, I fold part of it out when loading up then fold it back over to protect the trim. I have some extra in my garage from my move. You are welcome to one if you want it. I can post pics if you want.

Agree on putting the effort on the bins rather than protecting the interior trim. Safer to have cargo secure as well. Have a look at a cargo net that secures to the existing floor pop-up connecting points. I picked upon just off eBay for a tenner. If you got 2, securing them to the right and left side anchor points then to each other on top of the bins, might work best. Congrats on the new ride! Pics please!!

This link is for liners that are custom fit. They may / may not work for you.
Company was easy to work with. Good quality / stitching, were easy to install and fit well.
I don't 'think' they have a panel for the rear hatch.
I 'think' there's a well written customer review on this site.

I have them in black on my Q5 in Monsoon Gray, installed in 2012 with zero issues.

I've definitely considered this but I take the bins in and out at least once a day. I'd prefer that I don't have to re-cover them and tie them down every time. My cargo area will be pretty full/ snug so it's unlikely they will have far to go anyways. Mainly don't want them to scratch up the back when I punch the gas ;)

I don't think I'll have enough extra space for those. The area is pretty packed full of equipment. I will keep them in mind just in case though.

    1. Thanks for the input, hopefully they don't notice that mine isn't on a tablet. If so I'm only out $5 so no biggie.
    2. I'm going to try and integrate it with IFTTT somehow or talk to one of my programmer buddies and see if they can whip up a script for me.
    4. MMI Firmware. My current version is HN+_US_AU3G_K0814. Maybe the dealer updated it during the certification process.

Thanks so much! If I decide to go that route I may give you a shout or just run down to home depot and grab one.

Most of my net anchors and/or bungee anchors will be covered by the equipment. Once I get it all situated I'll see if there are any open anchor points.

I emailed them, they do not have that piece but said they could custom make one if I sent them a template. Might be an option if I can't come up with something better. Thanks!

Great links, thank you! I messaged phillip to see if 2016 maps were available for MMI 3G+ yet.

Looks like the carista app will do pretty much everything I was looking for, may have to give it a try.

Yes. Maybe the dealer updated it prior to selling it as a CPO.

I tried this on my A6 shortly after I purchased it. It took T-Mobile less than 24 hours to figure out it wasn't in a tablet and the shut the service off. Once I put it back in a table it worked again. I tried it with both of my 200mb sims and it did it to both.
