Question Should new tires go on back or front?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

I took a hit on one tire that has made it unusable. All four tires are about 15K miles used, so I am going to replace two tires to keep a match on the axle.

My question is should the new tires go on back or front on the S5?

    I appreciate your thoughts.

I'm shocked that at 15k you have tires left at all. I would think you would change them all.

I believe the default torque split is 40/60 F/R, so my intuition says rear? Maybe someone who actually knows what they're talking about can verify

How much thread left on other tires? It's highly possible that you have to replace them all.

They are fine, as the Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires are all-season with a 50K mile warranty. I need to measure depth but at this point they have plenty of tread left. Maybe I don't drive hard enough, although my wife would disagree. :)

Another thought I had was finding a single replacement, but I am very wary of buying a used tire. Any thoughts on that possibility?

    Ideal: Replace all.

Slightly less ideal: put 2 new on rear.

Thanks. My gut was that rear was the right answer for the Audi. I appreciate y'alls input. (That's 'you all' for those from a more northern persuasion. )

Could also get the new tires shaved down to match the tread depth of the other 2.

Second this, that'll be the best solution.
As for used tires, I wouldn't worry too much as long as that tire is not damaged.

Regardless of power split, the fronts always wear faster than the rears due to the fact that they support more load and do the turning. Put the new tires on the front if you want the new tires to get close to wearing the same as the 15K rears.

Another trick to get more life out of your tires, if they're directional, is to have them dismounted and mounted with the insides of the tires to the outside of the wheels when they're about half worn. I got 120k miles out of four sets of tires on my 2009 S5 doing that with my winter and summer tires, and still had half tread life left on my second set of winter tires.
