    Having problems finding correct axle

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So replacing front left axle on my 2000 atw engine 1.8 manual trans. The guy I bought car from had a spare new axle. I proceeded to install bit noticed the bolts are larger diameter and also Allen head not the triple square. Doing some searching on ecs etc and they differ from engine code however it appears the atw ones they offer also have the larger bolts. Any help would be great. Thanks guys. Here is a pick of the damaged one.

Was the old C/V axle making noise? If not you could simply buy a boot kit and repack the joint and replace the boot. I

Does the new axle you have slip into the spindle and bolt up to the transmission fine? If so, dont worry about the different bolts. Originals are triple square, while aftermarket axles are usually like you said allen head shaped, believe it was a 17mm impact socket i used.

I would just take your old axle to a shop and have it rebuilt. When I worked at a shop we did that for all audis. It was just impossible to order the right one so we just had them rebuilt instead.

Or you can take to the dealership for a remanufactured one and they give you credit for the core

I got two new axles for my b5 from auto parts warehouse online. Paid around 165 with shipping for two A1 Cardone front axles, new, not rebuilt, with lifetime warranty. Sure, it isnt a original axle, but can you beat the price and warranty? I live in NYC, the roads are horrible here. Anything you install, oem or aftermarket, it will feel the wrath of the potholes anyway.

Got the email from them, looks like everything 20 percent off and free shipping. Maybe good time to consider their parts.

Alright. Here is what you need to do. Figure out if the inner cv joint is 100mm or 108mm. I believe those are the two sizes. The larger one is for front wheel drive cars. The smaller is for quattro. The front wheel drive axles use larger diameter bolts. The quattro uses smaller. Measure then order. Remeber 1" is roughly 25mm. Done.
