Tires have a slit 90 miles after purchase (used)

So I drove the RS7 for the third time ever tonight. Just passed 90 miles and while out for a drive tonight the tire indicator came on. I made it home, luckily I was close, and did an inspection. Turns out there is a small slit on the inside tread of the rear driver side. Can hear the air leaking out especially when I put my finger over it. Obviously this is a wear issue even though I just purchased the car last week but what are your thoughts on bringing this to the dealers attention? I hit absolutely nothing, was actually on a very smooth surface when it happened. In all my years of driving I've never had a slit happen like where there is not a screw or nail inside of it. I know these tires are like hockey pucks at 40° but still I was not even driving aggressive whatsoever.

Any thoughts on if this is patchable? Looks a little too close to the sidewall…

Road can be smooth as silk and you can still run over something that will puncture your tire and you may not know it until the pressure drops. Have had this happen a couple times. As far as repairing it I would check with a reputable tire place, such America's Tire co, they should be able to determine if it is safely repairable.

You could have easily punctured it without knowing it- I don't think it's fair to blame the dealer.

Most tire shops where I live won't repair in the first tread block. You probably can find a shop that will be willing to do so though...

Yea I understand not blaming the dealer. Really just hoping its repairable. The treads are only about 65% anyways. Have a tire gauge at work to see what's remaining tomorrow. What is the standard "it's awd so all tires need to be replaced" tread threshold?

It's against DOT rules to repair outside the outermost ring. That's considered sidewall.

Shaving down a new tire is an option.

If you're tire wasn't leaking before and it's leaking now, you ran something over.
The repairable area is 1/2" in from the inner belt edge.
Take it to America's Tire and have a professional inspect it. They will repair for free. Just return the favor and send some business their way.
    Good luck.

Does plugging have any negative effect on the speed rating?
I go pretty fast-->>> and just noticed something about the size of a pin (very small) stuck in the outer tread of the tire. Doesn't seem to be losing any pressure, but I'm not eager to pull it out either. It's already bent sideways and flat now.

I had mine patched also, similar location... America's Tire did it without question.

I patch all my tires myself(and friends and family). On my previous S6 I had put on brand new Pilot AS/3 and within a week I got a nail in the corner of the tread. I know its a no-no but I patched it anyway. Lasted me with no issues till the tires were done at 20k miles. I wouldnt hesitate to trust a patch where your hole in the tread is.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I took the wheel off this AM and brought it to a trusted tire shop near me in Chicago and was told they would not touch it, need to replace all 4... Of course they want the business. I then went to my local gas station/tire repair Militos Mobil and they put a plug in it no problem. Unfortunately they do not do internal patches so its just a poke and plug. Seems that it is on ground contact area so I think ill give it a try for a few weeks. I have a major road trip late summer so il likely replace all 4 before then anyways.

After researching on the forums and Tirerack, I may give these tires a try. Seem to have pretty good reviews

Hope you don't mind me jumping in with a question....

Why do you guys (USA) talk about "shaving tires" if you have to replace a single tire?

In my 35 years of driving (UK) I have never, ever shaved a tire, been told to shave a tire, or been recommended by any tire fitter to shave a tire.

Is this something your tire dealers invented?

    Cheers

This applies to AWD vehicles. AWD requires all tires to match and have no more than 4/32" difference to prevent damage to the transfer case.

    Thanks for the reply Tireguy.

I should have added, never, ever, with 12 years of Quattro's......

And unless your planning to shave your spare tire whenever you use it, I still thinks its unnecessary.
