Popping noise when wheels turned in reverse?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey all,

Hoping someone here can she some light on whats going on with my car. I recently purchased a 2009 A5 3.2L and when reversing and the wheel is turned it almost feels like the tires are slipping, the car like pops and knocks back (hard to explain will get a video). At first I thought maybe this was the AWD and the low profiles losing grip but on second thought I think it may be something different and was wondering is this is common or if there is an under lying issue anyone may know about. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it's your spring popping from getting bind. It's common and nothing to really worry about mine has done this too several times

Thank you guys I was getting worried, so you think I should just leave it, no need to replace springs?

Hmm, strange because I have the same issue, but I have air suspension. Lately, when I am leaving parking lots, and I turn a good amount, I feel the outside wheel "skipping" or jolting a few times. Sounds almost like ABS or traction control, like OP stated.

It has to do with our cars not using pure Ackerman geometry. Corvettes and Porsches do it too. My Cayman S was worse than my S5. It is not as noticeable in warm temps when tires are more compliant. from Wikipedia ---"Modern cars do not use pure Ackermann steering, partly because it ignores important dynamic and compliant effects, but the principle is sound for low-speed manoeuvres. Some race cars use reverse Ackermann geometry to compensate for the large difference in slip angle between the inner and outer front tyres while cornering at high speed. The use of such geometry helps reduce tyre temperatures during high-speed cornering but compromises performance in low-speed maneuvers."https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ackerm...ering_geometry

It may be totally unrelated, but my car made a pop sound when turning the wheels to full lock and back to center at low speeds, which started after a clutch service was performed on the car by the dealer. After having everything double-checked, it ended up being that the bottom bolt of the passenger side sway bar link had not been tightened to spec. The pop went away immediately and never came back. If you recently had any suspension work performed on the car, make sure all bolts/nuts are checked...also check the bolts on the stabilization crossbar underneath the car.

The popping on coilovers is a given - this is common. On OEM suspension it shouldn't be popping.

Ok so it's warmed up a bit and I'm thinking maybe the car was extra stiff from sitting, the popping/jolting is now almost non existent BUT now when I first pull forward I here a screeching/almost metal metal sound. At first I thought maybe a pebble got stuck because I was driving on gravel but looked and see nothing and it only happens on cold starts. I'm thinking could this be power steering related?

When I went to the one of the lowest settings on my H&R coilovers, I experienced a loud pop/bang when turning the wheels at 0MPH to prepare for a sharp or uturn. My friends and mechanic told me this was normal due to the amount of space available in the suspensions. However, I never had this issue with stock. Hope that helps.

I had this sound with my S5, the dealer changed my front drivers side control arm, it was bent at the connection, so when you turned the wheel far, it would raise up and the pop back into place. After it was changed it never made that noise again. May not be your issue but it's possible, hope this helps.

Not sure if youre referring to the same thing but when I cut the wheel super hard it feels like im going over almost a bunch of small bumps so i went to Audi and they told me it is caused by the quattro system in the cold weather and is nothing to worry about.

Never updated this but it turned out to be my passenger side control arm knocked out of place and rubbing into my sub frame. $3,000 later it's all good...

Yup I had to replace the subframe which was only available at Audi and was $1200 alone, then replaced both control arms, alignment, and labor. Wasn't very happy about it.
