    Question on Clear Wrap

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Winter has resulted in 2 minor chips in my hood so I'll be taking the car to my paint guy in the spring.

I'm thinking of having the front of the car wrapped (SunTek or XPEL) to avoid this in the future. My question is, I assume that with a clear wrap you don't have to worry about swirls in the warp. If this is the case, I'm thinking of having a full wrap done since I've got Brilliant Black. Currently, no swirls and I'd like to keep it that way between details.

Thanks...new to the whole wrap thing.

You definitely want to make sure you get any paint correction done before the wrap or you will see them through the wrap. You won't swirl the wrap at all. You can also get a ceramic coating on top of the wrap which will make it a ton easier to keep clean. Make sure you do your research on the installer, don't go to the cheapest guy and make sure he's got some experience under his belt.

I have a full wrap on my rs. Tho you are correct on helping prevent repainting. You will eventually get a puncture on the xpel film. In turn, you will want to rewrap the panel punctured due to it starting to lift and get debri inside the puncture and look terrible. Just keep that in mind. But it will definitely will save you on respray and worse damage then just paint chips. Cleaning is much easier ad well.

Excellent! Thanks for the confirmation. I do currently have a ceramic coating and plan to coat over any wrap. My detailer works with a guy who does wraps and I've seen his work in person and it looked flawless. He did warn me about potentially having to redo a panel once in awhile but, as mentioned, much cheaper than paint.

Looks like the new exhaust may have to wait a bit.

I also have a full wrap (XPEL Ultimate). Warranty will cover curling, so that's not really an issue unless you didn't have an authorised installer do the work. And yes, you want to have them do a full paint correction (claying, 2-stage polish, etc) before applying the wrap.

    Enjoy!

Final question. I talked to my guy this morning and he's willing to cut me a break (he's gotten several new clients through me) and do a full wrap for about $3700. He might actually go lower but he has to talk to his partner first. How is that looking for pricing?

    Thanks

Fixing 2 chips is more costly than wrapping? To each his own but I don't get this wrapping thing. Unless entire car is wrapped you always see the lines. Arent you just waxing plastic? Not sure how wrap can be stronger than clear coat. I would far rather get detail/correction done annually than wrap my car. Like plastic on a couch.......Just my opinion.

Follow up question on the depth and gloss difference of paint with a ceramic coating vs. clear wrap with coating. I love how the wet / deep the black looks with the ceramic coating. Will I lose any of that gloss and / or depth with a wrap?

Go for the exhaust and save your dough for annual touch up and or paint correction. I really don't understand what this wrap craze is all about. Unless entire car is done you can ALWAYS see the line. Are you saving the car for the next guy? It will be no more valuable in a few years if its been wrapped. Too each his own but I dont get it.

Miles has done a full wrap for his last two cars. Helps with resale value too. I've done it on my front bumper and headlights. Its a weekend car, otherwise, I consider full hood, bumper, and fender.

If you do the whole car....you better do it from when you drive off the lot. Not worth it at this point.
