    01E carbon synchro wear question

Does anyone have significant mileage on their JHM 1-2 collar and carbon synchros?

I opened my 01E to find an upgraded OEM 2nd gear synchro and stock everything else (JHM dvd is an awesome step by step for a first timer BTW). My 1-2 collar is beginning to do it's hard-shift thing and i get some nice crunching into 1st and second, so i've cracked it open to replace the guts. Can't figure out how to get pics to post otherwise I'd be showing off my unchipped teeth.

I am wondering how the carbon synchros act over time, as the magnets will not attract the carbon that breaks off as they wear. Considering that the carbon is supposedly much harder/stronger than the chromoly, does this mean i have small rocks in the fluid over time that will eat the bearings and other surfaces? Is a fluid flush recommended after a few hundred city miles?

Anyone with more than 10-20,000 miles on a JHM set? I found some posts from 2013 with no clear longevity results. I am wondering if 2 years later people have advice to share.

Thanks in advance. Lot's of questions; just looking for some experience to avoid hassles down the road.
This is a stage 3 k04 with ~65k mi on it that sees road trips and track use.

i have the carbon synchros in my trans with oem shift collar. 35k miles on it and drives great still. No noticeable decrease in performance or any issues as of yet. the car cought fire though and im in the process of salvaging the trans and then im putting it in the avant i now have. you cant go wrong with these synchros in my opinion.

The updated OEM Audi synchros are carbon as well.

    You're over thinking this.

Actually, the OP question is valid.

    Although both synchros are carbon...

    - OEM Audi utilizes a thermal spraying technique to embed the carbon to the forged brass ring.
    - JHM uses a resin impregnated material which is glued to the cast brass ring.

The OEM Audi bonding of the carbon is clearly superior than the other method. Without turning this into a JHM vs AA debate, both companies' synchros seem to be holding up fine. I know of some JHM rebuild kit cars with over 50k on the kit with no issues whatsoever.

Someone can feel free to correct me if any info I provided is incorrect.

He was asking about worn off particles damaging the trans. My point is that they both will wear... leaving particles just like the other.

Unless the entire friction surface is coming off of the JHM rings I don't see how it's going to be any different.

Does Advanced have their own synchros? I thought they just sell JHM rebuild kits..

From what I understand, the AA kit uses 100% OEM parts. Scotty takes the updated collar a step further and sends it through cryo treatment to make it even stronger.

Yep. I think Scotty will use JHM if you ask for it but prefers OEM.

I made a thread that I resurrected recently which had some decent input from JHM consumers.
