Where do you buy your oil from?

I was looking at ECS Tuning because they seem to have a good price on their Castrol Professional oil service kit, but I was curious as to where (and what) everyone buys from and uses.

Yeah, complete agreement on the M1 0W40 from W*mart. Really can't beat the pricing, it's a no-brainer and meets some tough OEM specs.

I think W*mart probably has other 502.00 oils at this time: Castrol 0W40

I also get the M1 0w40, but usually Amazon, when their price is at least close to Walmart. Mobil regularly has rebate deals on this, which when combined with my gift card shenanigans, results in it being around $10/jug.

Anyone use Shell Rotella T6? I'm planning on getting back on the Liqui-Moly grind for the B8, but I exclusively ran Shell on my B7 with good results. No UOI from it, unfortunately.

Amazon has Liqui-Moly for 5qt @ $37.07 ($7.41 per qt), so I'll be doing that.

I use it in my motorcycle, it's a good oil that works with wet clutches. But it doesn't meet 502, so I don't use it in the cars.

Ooh nice! I was looking at Motul specific 502, but if I could find something better or equal for a cheaper price, then that'd be sweet. This is about $10 cheaper than the specific I've found

I know the one down the road has a sale in store as well. I may compare the two and see which works out to be better.

Not sure of the origin of the oil but after reading all the m1 responses I might be going back to that since that is all I ran in my mk4 gti since it was purchased new and never burned any oil but it was a vr6 not a turbo.

Anyone know the difference between Specific and X-cess? I didn't have time to research it for my first change, just went with top-line... but they are both 502 approved, from a reputable company so I'd bet both are fine choices.

Thanks, great link, and lead me to some oher useful info.

To save everyone the TL; DR: the main difference between X-Cess and Specific is the level of SAPS additives. SAPS stands for Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur. These are anti-wear additives, which sound like a good thing but do have some downsides. The issue is than when burned they contribute to engine deposits, and can clog your catalytic converter. Lower SAPS oils can help prevent valve deposits indirect injection engines like ours, see page 19 of this PDF. http://www.lubrizol.com/engineoiladd.../lowersaps.pdf

    My opinion:

If you are currently burning any amount of oil, are not really planning to keep the car past 100,000 miles, and want to avoid valve deposits and minimize manual valve cleaning, Specific is a better choice because it is a mid-SAPS oil.

If you are not burning oil, keep your cars till the wheels fall off, want to minimize internal engine wear, and can deal with more frequent valve cleaning, X-Cess is the better choice because it is a full SAPS oil.

Guess I'm switching to X-Cess. My other Audi has 240k miles and the wheels ain't fallen off yet. (But the right rear wheel bearing sure is getting growly.) I have had that sucker for more than 15 years.

I am lucky enough to have a summit racing locally which carries Motul and other hard to find products. So I go in there and they price match a full oil change kit from any online retailer that has the price and kit I want.

While the Rotella T6 is not 502 spec it is a very stout oil and for people who are on a budget I would highly recommend it over buying some of the other off the shelf brands at your local parts store.

I think this thread should be have a sticky in every single platform. It would eliminate every thread ever made about oil.

lol, I am probably older than you. I was only exaggerating the fact that their are a lot of pointless oil threads, "what oil do I use?" That could be avoided.

I have yet to see one thread on oil asking for information that dparms thread hasn't covered.

While I do agree there should be an organized oil sticky, I beleive some of the valuable conversation/extra research may be missed by using those "all-knowing" threads.

Like SAPS, I learned something new today
