Here are some pics from a refresh we did on a customer car. Did the timing chain upgrade and installed some headers with a custom exhaust.
The car sounds great and looks even better with this beauty under the hood.
If you have any questions or need some service on your 4.2, feel free to send us a message and we can set you up with everything you need.

Depending on what you need replaced it can be anywhere from $4000 to $5500.

The original motor had 200k miles on it. We replaced it with a refreshed 40k mile motor.

I know right! !! My plans are to do the timing set, add headers and full exhaust with a port and polish job on the intake. Should help with being slow. Then I'll JHM tune it. Now we're talking

Yes first pic is a before shot. Just happens to be from a different motor which was done in the car.

Yes that pic is actually from a B7 that we did the timing service on while in the car. We were slacking on the picture documentation when we did this B6. I don't even have a pic of it on the dyno.

Being as we had a clean 40k mile motor to put in we didn't do anything internally. Just top end reseal, check compression, and fresh coils/plugs.
The finished swap was definitely a huge improvement over the old tired 200k motor we pulled out.

Guys if you have moderate mechanical abilities and have an engine hoist you can do this yourselves. not extremely challenging to any extent, you will also need to purchase or rent the timing tools. If you have 3 days at most of free time you can save your self thousands of dollars.

This is absolutely true. We have customers that have successfully completed this as a d.i.y.

I've been reading for years that you need to pull the motor. Maybe I should try it when it comes time to do my clutch.

from what i have heard....yes you can do the timing service with the motor in the car. but from what i have read, it is about as much of a pita as it is to pull the engine because you still have to take the transmission out, do the timing service under the car (unless you have a lift). It seems to me that while you CAN do the service with the engine in the car, its probably better to pull the engine and put it on a table so you can have adequate room and light. However that is just my opinion. Props to jimmy and others who have done it with the engine in the car! My back would never allow it haha

I wouldn't suggest doing it in the car unless you are on a lift. It is easier to pull the motor.

The only point to do it without pulling the engine out would be if you also wanna do the clutch and have a lift. Other than this id pull the engine. Its pretty easy just time consuming.
