WTF are our hoods so heavy?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The hood strut is blown out on my '14 S4... And holy SHITE batman is that thing heavy!!

Seems it would be a great weight reducer to switch to an aftermarket hood, but Im not finding any.

    Thoughts? Links? Pics? Do share!

    (And YES, I searched)

I wish there were. Aluminum hoods on new cars like the FRS are light as a feather compared to ours. Obviously smaller, but still would be lighter.

After our last hailstorm that I got caught up in I'm glad the hood is heavy . Large pea size hail and not a single dimple. Wasn't the case with my old Saab.

Seibon has them for B8 and 8.5s. Less than half that price too.

OK - so that's good for maybe 0.3 in the quarter - using old school math.

Shouldn't the hoods between the A4 and S4 be the same?

Also I wonder if there are any functioning vented hoods. If you're going to be putting the money into a new carbon fiber hood, maybe a little more aggressive styling would be a nice addition. I know there was one around for the B8's here. Don't know how reliable this site was but still nice to see as a possible option

Can someone verify hood fit for b8.5? As in can anyone look up OEM part numbers on A4 vs S4?

$880 for a carbon-fiber hood seems too good to be true... I would have just bought one instead of paying an extra $400 for the full-hood clear bra DOH!

The only "light aluminum" hood I've seen was at the factory, where they had 2 variations of the 3 series hood (think it was the S3 hood) - one was the previous iteration, the other was from the current iteration. Both were aluminum, the new S3 hood was 50% lighter than the old one, we were able to physically lift both hoods to compare weight difference.

Why not just follow this DIY to cut out your own hood vents and reduce the weight of your hood? http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...14370-More-Air

It's 12 pages of good reading.

How about you lose weight yourself then work on the car?

Believe it or not, outside of the high-priced Audi world, this is a normal price for a carbon fiber hood. I have one from Seibon and it weighs in at just under 19lbs. Also, our stock hoods are indeed steel. ;) Hence why they are so cheap to get a replacement from the dealership
