    ECU replacement

How difficult is it to replace my ecu? I'm asking about mating the new (used) ecu to operate with my car. Doesn't this require higher level software than Vagcom?

Not sure if our car is the same as the S4 but here is a link for the S4 B8 http://www.goapr.com/support/install...ation/B8S4.pdf. Perhaps you can ask APR if it's the same

I had to replace my ecu in my 2010 A4 after frying my original one. Had an indy shop do it, and they had to hook into Audi's system to program it to the car. Don't think this is something you could do by yourself.

Im not 100% sure, but you need a new ECU not a used one. Once a ECU has been programmed to a set of keys it can't be reprogrammed again.

Takes about 10 minutes total. Does need to be flashed by the dealer or someone who can hook into Audi systems. Dealer charged me ~$150 total. I sourced the ECU from an online company that resales OEM parts. Cost about $300. Way better than the $1200+ Audi wanted.

Remove the wiper sheild under the hood. Its 2 screws that are plastic. Its on the driver's side about 14" from the fender going in to the back of the dash. Has 2 large wire clips holding a ton of wires.

EDIT: Bermudakid - I have a used ECU and it is flashed to my keys, FWIW.

They shouldn't need half of that. All they need to really charge for is 10 minutes of work and maybe 10 minutes to flash the ECU. I don't think it should take that much time on either part. I can do it in under 5 minutes in and out. It is extremely easy.

Yeah but you know how these guys are getting paid by the hour. I hope they hook you up and fix the issue.

So you can do this with a VAGCOM?

@ The Infiltrator: Ive been here for 24 years.....Ive been using them since day one. If a company does not accept them, I search until someone will take it!

The flash takes about 30 minutes. In the US, Audi charged my indy shop a fee of $50 just to connect to their system.

Well, got this today after starting the 2012 A4 Avant:

    1 Fault Found:
2468 - Implausible Data Received from Engine Control Module
    U0401 00 [167] - -
MIL ON - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

01314- Engine Control Module 008 Implausible Signal

Looks like based on the information from Ross Tech the ECU has died: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...00054#mw-pages

Question: If I pick up an ECU from eBay will it run but throw a ton of codes? I would prefer NOT to take the car to the dealer but most indie shops don't have the VAG 5051 tool or other to code modules.

Battery is new and has good voltage. Started car this afternoon car ran smooth for a few minutes, then died. Fan is on constantly, will not run. Car is APR tuned and has been since 2012. Never had a bit of trouble previously, just looks like the ECU is a goner.

    Any thoughts?

The car is not going to start with an ECU swap. The ECU is part of the immobilizer. You'd need to take it to whatever shop is going to redo the immobilizer adaptation and component protection process, and swap the ECU there.

Swapping ECU based on a single not confirmed DTC seems a bit nuclear.

Well, car won't run and it's not because its out of gas. The DTC's get cleared and they come right back and they point to a fried ECU.

I've ordered an ECU and sending it to the shop once it comes in. Don't want to monkey around with the coding drama and shuttling around between shops etc.

Ran the scan again and same codes are coming up. Costly failure for sure.

    Hi,

Can someone please help. My mechanic has swapped my ecu with a replacement from Audi and everything has adapted ok except the immobilizer because of something to do with the Body Control Module. Neither they or Audi Germany can so far work it out. The new ECU is from Germany and done with my VIN. Car was running now won't finish adaptation.

    Love some assistance please!!

You probably mean the BCM2, which is the J393, which is the immobilizer master. The BCM, which is the J519, is not part of the immobilizer group. As to why the immobilizer adaptation won't finish, I assume they have some error code or something to work from. Otherwise, they'll need to figure out how to create the necessary tracing to produce something to work from.
