    Oil Level Sensor Fault Code

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I had an "Oil Level Sensor Failure" error pop up on my dash tonight. It also no longer gives me the option of checking the oil level in the MMI. Scanned for fault codes and it came back with:

    4635 - Engine Oil Temp. Sensor (G8)
    P0196 00 [047] - Implausible Signal
Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

    and

    4640 - Engine Oil Temp. Sensor (G8)
    P0197 00 [032] - Signal too Low
Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

I cleared the codes and started the car. The error came back about 10-15 seconds after starting the car.

    A few questions:
    1. Does the oil level sensor also do oil temperature? I'm assuming it is the one installed in the bottom of the oil pan and found here: click
    2. Would the failure of this sensor cause the radiator fan to run full speed after the car is shut off? I just noticed my car doing this and it seems to coincide with the oil level sensor fault code.
    3. Is there anything else I should look for before I change the sensor?

Oil level sensor is also the oil temp sensor.
Does the wiring to it look OK?
Oil temp sensor has nothing to do with radiator fan operation.
Change the sensor (drain the oil first!)

Thanks. After looking around more online it looks like I should take a peek at the relays inside the ECU box as well. Hoping it's not a lot of electrical problems. Picking up an oil level sensor from the dealership today and will assess everything when I'm installing my ECS aluminum belly pan on friday.

Spliced everything back together and it fixed the problem, including the radiator fans running at full speed when I shut off the car.

That sucks but at least you were able to fix it. What's your plan to stop them from coming back?

I just pissed all over the engine bay

No I dont know. I read putting drops of peppermint oil around the area helps keep them away. Might try that.

Hahaha what a pain in the ass. Try the peppermint and if that doesn't work go with something stronger I guess.

I have the same fault come up on my 2015 A3 TDI.

Originally it was just the oil level sensor system fault warning and then the check engine light started shortly after, w/ the code P0197.

So am I correct on that the oil level sensor reads level and temperature and the A3 TDI's do not have independent EOT sensors?
