I must have the only S5 out there where the old button did not just want to "pop" out. I basically had to destroy the old one to get it out. So with that being said, below are my hopefully helpful tips to make it easier for the next person.
btw...I have a 2009 S5....
Lifting up the shift boot was pretty easy...simply use a trim removal blade if possible (they're plastic and won't harm the dash) to pry the right side in so you can pull up on the leather and release the tabs holding it in place.
The shift indicator panel (if you have an auto like me) is also pretty easy. The tab holding it in place is under the top edge (under "park") and can be pulled back while you lift up on the front edge. It literally does "lift" straight up and is only held in by that one spring clip up top and a grooved channel under the "s" area.

So like I said, even after getting the push button top piece off (by accident) and removing the spring/plunger guts (which is why you see the exposed led light), pushing up from the underside and pulling up from the top side with needle nose pliers would not release the button from its surrounding area....just glad I didn't ding up the top in my frustration. So the best way IMHO to remove it as easily as possible is to simply use a dashboard pry tool to lift up the entire MMI...I did this accidentally while trying to pull out the button...as you can see from the pics, it does just lift right up giving you full access to the underside of the button which is important to release the plug (push the release tab on the bottom and pull out).
Pulling out the plug is important as despite what other folks have said about just pulling the entire button out from the top and unplugging the button, the cavity provided is not designed for it to fit through. You will not be able to put the plug in through the hole and then push the entire assembly back in. You must put the new button in first and then plug in from the underside.
Of course, lifting the whole MMI surround made this a piece of cake.
Here's a pic of the button I ordered from www.genuineaudiparts.com No modification needed...plugged right in and worked. Part number is across the top of the sticker (ends in "C"...standard 09 button without red ring ends in "A"...there is a "B" red ring button as well, but I'm assuming there was just a minor change between that one and this one).

Here is the button positioned properly in the cavity and as you can see, I still have the entire MMI housing lifted up for easy install.

...and a couple of shots with everything snapped back in place.

Now I'm off to replace the spare tire cover handle...little piece of plastic that holds the spring to keep the handle closed was broken. Should snap right out and back in.
