So I'm probably long overdue for an update. Got a new galaxy s5 so pictures should be better from here on in.

we got some snow, so I decided to.... test out the quattro?

    20141114_093145 by ilovequattro

    ... it works.

Also won this misguided freight auction and have about 37 different BNIB parts to resell.

sooo with my earnings, I may or may not have bought this

I suppose this thread might end up in the b5s4 section now...... because one turbo just isn't enough.

also the car is being well used... lol

Word of advice. If you throw a 2.7T in a B5 A4 and post it in the B5 S4 section, they may ridicule you. Just a heads up. They tend to frown down upon the B5 A4.

Yeah I wasn't serious it will stay here regardless. But I'm sure I can deal with the ridicule. After frequenting a subaru forum you can really deal with anything online.

On a side note. I have a few questions on bolting up a 2.7 to a 01a 5 speed. What clutch should I use and how far off is my gearing going to be.

Not really sure. Maybe someone will chimme in. But I would assume 240mm flywheel with S4 pressure plate. Basic 240mm clutch kit. I would confirm this, though. There is someone on here who swapped in the 2.7t and ran the 01A. Can't recall who. I would assume the 2.8 tranny to be better with the 2.7t than the 1.8T tranny.

that sounds like its on the right track, I'm going to look further into it and will post back with a result. I know many people run the 2.7t in the b6 platform so I'm just going to figure out how they do it and pick their brains (war machine) comes to mind as he is local.

and while I'm sure a 2.8 tranny would be better, if this transmission is coming out I may as well put a 6spd in its place.

Which leads me to another question - The rear differential in the donor car, Its Auto/TIP, is that specific to the auto trans or is it possibly interchangeable with a 01E 6spd.
    same question for driveshafts.

Assuming they are different but never hurts to ask.

    Cheers sir.

If you go 6-speed you'll need basically everything. The trans, linkage, shifter/shift box, driveshaft, rear diff, and front axles will all need to come from a 6-speed car. And I don't remember what year your car is. But if it's a 99.5, or 00' you'll need to swap in the s4 front uprights to make the front axles work. If you're an 01' don't worry about it, unless you want to upgrade to the s4 brakes.

fair enough, that's what I figured. So all the tip parts are useless to me.

I've been looking at these kits, - although they are tip to 6mt it still gives me everything I need for 01A-01E 5mt-6mt.
    http://advancedautomotion.com/shop/p...roducts_id/328

also, my car is a 01, so to use my S4 brakes I will need the uprights along with lower CA's iirc? because of length?
Strange how the b5s4 brakes bolt up to b6a4 spindles but not b5a4. :/
oh and before i forget, what about the front axles. My 5mt axles wont fit the auto spindles will they.

The HP2 mounting holes are spaced further apart than on an a4. Which is why you would need to swap the uprights to use the s4 front brakes. The tip s4 uprights will work on your car just fine, they're all the same. Auto, or manual, it doesn't make a difference.

96-00 1.8 a4's used a smaller outter cv. In 01' they switched to the larger v6 sized outter cv's. As long as the uprights off the s4 are steel, you can bolt up the s4 uprights without any issues. If they're aluminum you'll need to swap over the front lower control arm with them. The lower balljoint is larger because of the steel insert that's pressed into the aluminum uprights.

good info as always, thank you sir.
my spindles are magnetic so not aluminum. I ordered new arms from fcp regardless, front end could use a refresh.
Do you know if the abs sensors are interchangeable or would I need the sensors from the s4. Unfortunately I cut the sensor wires from my s4. would it be possible to solder new ends on?
anyone have schematic or diagram of the wiring?

yeah, you'll need to use the wheel speed sensors from the s4. a4's use a smaller diameter wheel speed sensor that presses into the upright. s4's use a larger one that is held in with an allen bolt just like the b6. (the sensor end is the exact same as a b6, but the plugs are different then the b6)

You might be able to solder the sensors back on, but it won't be easy. The wires are moulded into some pretty thick rubber on those things. personally, I'd probably just buy new ones. or grab some from a pick and pull yard.

So I've been meaning to update this forever. This might be a long post -forgive me.

I got my s4 brakes on, New abs sensors and spindles, new control arms and sway bar links, tie rods etc.

ended up parting out the rest of the S4 Donor car, right down to the motor. I decided a swap wasnt a good idea just yet, still need a reliable daily for a bit. But that doesn't mean I cant have fun. I put the money to use rebuilding the work wheels I had.

I bought 2 new barrels, had the lips, hardware and centre caps professionally polished, and the faces powdercoated.

Was really happy with how they turned out. Thanks to JD polishing and Crimson Coatings.

decided to go pick up some tires

Also opted to go with some 42DD spacers to clear the brakes and make the super high offsets work a little better.

    Finally got them on

    and a much needed allignment

Then I decided to work a bit on the interior.
I brushed the aluminum trim of the S4 donor car and cleared over it and threw it in with the leather door cards.
I also had the door pulls powdercoated black to complete the look.
Picked up A JHM shifter and a flossy knob somewhere in the mix and also retrofitted a C5 RNS-E with full functioning dis directoins and bluetooth and aux etc.

Other than regular oil changes, fuel filter and a faulty coolant flange, I have just been focusing on my subaru and enjoying summer. Nothing that cool to report but feels good to finally update this.

    Cheers guys.

Also interested in this RNS-E swap, I heard you need a full facelift car for it though (i.e. my 1999.5 won't cut it) because the wiring is different or something. If that turns out to be wrong though, that would be great haha

    Thanks,
For the install I picked up a c5 RNS-E from a member on here, it came with the adapter harness (quadlock) and radio antenna and gps antenna.
I then took the climate control from my s4 parts car and trimmed down the top till both the radio and the climate controls fit flush.
This way I didnt have to modify the faceplate of the rns-e and hurt the value.

for the dis functions to work I soldered in 2 wires from the quadlock harness to the cluster. Two CAN wires I'll find the link to the original thread later and update my post with more pictures.

For aux I took the connector from the back of my s4 parts car cluster. It is the same connector required for the AUX input of the rns-e. I soldered in a USB/AUX jack in my arm rest.
Then I picked up a usb Bluetooth/aux adapter from ebay. So I ended up with AUX and Bluetooth in my car for like 11$ shipped. I'll update with pictures of this too.

afaik the rns-e will work in a prefacelift car as long as you upgrade to the facelift centre console. However, as I am not familiar with facelift / prefacelift instrument cluster swaps so functioning nav in the DIS would be dependent on if you are able to swap clusters.

I believe this is correct. The prefacelift instrument cluster with LCD does not support navigation though. You would have to rewire a facelift instrument cluster in (2000+). Though it's not necessary for the rnse to work. It's just kinda cool to have turn directions on the instrument cluster

Btw car is looking on point

havent gone through with the 2.7t yet. planning on upgrading power soon. still deciding how I want to go about it while keeping it reliable. Either a moderate 2.7t or a bat 1.8t, but would really like something diesel. Im all over the board.

here are some pictures of the rns-e working with the cluster like someone requested above.

here you can see the street name and compass display with radio track listings above. This is when you have no set destination.
It gives pretty detailed instructions. If there is a turn a hashed bar comes up and becomes solid the closer you get to the turn, along with an arrow and distance measure - km or mi.
I'll try to get a picture but Ill have to find a corner where I can safely park.

Good to hear prefacelift can run RNS-E as well, my wallet doesn't like the sound of that though haha. Looks like I'll have to hunt one down to install this summer.

Anyways you car is looking great! I noticed in that last pic you returned to the A4 bumper, is that just for winter or did something happen to the S4 bumper?

Edit: just realized those RNS-Es go for $800-900, maybe I still won't be getting one haha.

First time I've seen this in a while. Looking great man. Do you still have the hatch spoiler on? I noticed it was in some pictures and not in others. Is it OEM or another brand?

It's an oem zender rs4 spoiler. I didn't want to drill holes In the hatch so it was just held on with 3m tape. It wasn't doing to well with the weather so I pulled it off with plans to reinstall in spring.

A4 bumper is just for winter but s4 bumper is also cracked in about 6 places so I might be replacing it come spring also.

Keep an eye out for rnse I didn't pay that much. Make sure you get one from a c5 a6. I know autohaas has them now and again for a fair price.

Every time I work on the b6 (1.8t) I'm reminded of how nice it is to have a tiny engine in a big bay.

IMO a bat diesel 4cyl would be the best option. And by best I mean fucking amazing.

A 4cyl bat diesel could be cool but a v6 tdi single turbo

    Just checking in,
Cars still fantastic. I had it up for sale but decided against it as it's just not time for me to let go yet.

    Did some spring maintenance,
Swapped the oil pan for one that was not cracked.
Did the pick up tube while I was in there, glad I did, as there were 5 holes in it....
    Welded in new flex pipe
Swapped steering rack for 3f cardone rebuilt oem zf one
rebuilt my axle with new cv boots (man is it hard to find inner boots for 2001 a4 1.8t's)
    replaced rear sway bar bushings
lowered the coilovers and put on summer wheels.
Picked up some Nitto Neogens for tires this year. Really happy with them so far.

I've been practicing my detailing and paint repair. All I can say is that it's really doing wonders for the 15 year old paint.

I started with a big scratch across my hood. through the paint and clear. I filled it in blotchy with an OEM paint pen. After, I wetsanded it with 1500 grit sandpaper. Then 2000 grit and went at it with the DA. I picked up a bunch of HD products. Quite happy with them picked up a package deal at a local indoor car show near the end of winter.

We'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

    Scratch filled

    Started sanding

    kept going

    Went all out.

    Cutting

After 2 more stages and wax. looks like new.

    Some random pictures.

    Till next time!
