OK, so first things first i guess i'll make my official introduction to the A4 side of Audizine. My name is Matt, some of you may recognize me from the C5 A6 section. i've owned my 01' allroad for the last four and a half years and taken it from bone stock(minus the shitty paint job) to what it is today. it's what most 2.7t guys would call "stage 2+". it's coilover converted, and really really loud (straight piped)
OK! enough of the allroad, on to the A4. so back in February i picked up a 2001.5 brilliant black A4 sport with a blown engine (rod through the block). up until now I've pretty much been in parts gathering mode picking up things up out of the classifieds when i spot a good deal up until now, tinkering on things when i had time.
i purchased the car from the owner of a shop that had bought it off a customer when the engine blew. he had intended to throw a bottom end in the motor and flip it, but was forced to sell before completion because he was getting married. so i managed to scoop up the car super cheap
original craigslist ad picture:
the car came to me with the engine out of the car fully disassembled, and random parts strewn throughout five boxes and crates.
like i said I've pretty much just been in parts gathering mode up until now, but i'll get try and get everyone up to speed on what i have actually got done on the car since i bought it.
for some reason, the first issue with the car i addressed was the interior. the car came with grey heated manual sport cloth seats, which normally i like, but they were in pretty poor condition. the entire interior of the car looked like it had been sprayed down with a two liter of pop, and the drivers seat had a small burn in the back rest. my initial plan for the interior was to swap in white s4 door cards, and black seats. i actually did this, but the rear seat i sourced was out of a car that had the rear window broken out, and the leather ended up cracking. fortunately "Captain Obvious" on here had a set of white seats he was looking to trade for some black ones. so i managed to do a trade with him for a front and rear set of white seats.
interior with just the door cards in.
while i had the seats out i pulled all the trim and wrapped it in CF cloth from PY Speed.
added a shift style alcanantara shift boot in black with white stitching.i don't have a picture but at the same time i installed a JHM trio package I got at the Audizine ten year aniversary from the boys at JHM. i have an 034 weighted delrin knob, but i need to reclaim it from my buddy J Ozzie. (that's right bitch. i haven't forgot.)
new back seat in
front seats in.
and some sport allweather mats. my car came with some super shitty autozone mats so that had to change.
and that's about it for the interior for now. i want to change the headliner to a black s4 one, i just need to get a couple more pieces for it.

and of course all new bearings, valve guides, and hardware.
i was fortunate enough to pick this up from "kink" on here. the story on this engine was that after he built it he went to china for a year, and after he got back he wrecked his car the FIRST time driving it. i was told it has less then 1500 miles on it after the build.
i was so excited after i got it when i was waiting or my roommate to get home to help me unload it, i ripped off the SAI, stock clutch, and most of the old PCV shit while it was still in the back of the truck
installed an integrated engineering SAI block off plate at the same time.
Aaannd that pretty much brings us up to today's activities.
so today, i went and picked up a cherry picker from a friend to hopefully get the engine set in the car. got the engine suspended so i could change the oil pan because it was cracked during the wreck.
i got the pan off the new engine fine, and grabbed the pan off the blown engine that came with the car and started cleaning it up to put it on. but that's when I found this little surprise...
yep. that's a hole. son of a... B!TCH!
this pretty much brought all progress to a screeching halt so i could run to the dealership and see if they had a pan. AND OF COURSE, they didn't. i ended up ordering a new one with all the gaskets, and sealant, but it won't be here until Wednesday. i did walk out with a new coolant bottle, new belts, and coolant that i needed though.
so to round out the day i went home and cleaned all the oily shit out the trans bellhousing.
so that's it. I'll continue to update this thread as i make progress. hope you guys enjoy it

Nice project. That motor does look pretty sleeper sitting in the back of the truck. Can't wait to see some more progress.

since the engine is sort of on hold until my new oil pan comes in, i decided to switch gears and work on a little brake swap I've been planning. since i put a Stoptech BBK on my allroad I've had my old setup sitting around, so i figured why not throw it on the a4?
this is pretty much what i have planned. S4 steel uprights, 321mm JHM lightweight rotors, B5 S4 HP2 calipers, ,Hawk HPS pads, and ECS stainless lines.
size difference between new and old rotor
first thing i did was press in new wheel bearings i had laying around, because a shop cracked my allroad upright that they were intended for.
old ish before starting work
thankfully before starting to install parts i remembered i had a some almost new front lower control arms, and 034 sway bar end links so i'll throw those in at the same time.
got the uprights in fine, but i ran into a couple problems.
1. the wheel speed sensors are different between the s4 and a4 so i'll have to get some and splice them in.
2. i was supposed to get caliper bolts with the uprights i ordered so i'll have to get new ones before i can finish installing the brakes.
while i was in the area i yarded all the evap junk out of the drivers side fender.
and i installed some s4 fender liners.
and that's about it. now i'm at a stand still on this until i can get my hands on some caliper bolts.

thanks for the offer, but I think i'll be alright. Bryan at audis4parts.com forgot to send me a battery cover i ordered with the uprights. i'll just get some from him when he sends it to me. i need to get those wheel speed sensors from him anyway.

haha trust me i know how u feel about those subframe bushings from 034 i trashed a subframe in the process of getting mine in and spent 2 weeks on the hunt for a new one before i could set the engine back in my car
Double DIN swap, pioneer avh4000, TONS of suede, 15% tint, Forge 007, apr/vdo, rs4 grille, GIAC chip, Depo ecodes with 55w 5000k HID's, ST Coilovers, 034 street density motor and trans mounts, 034 snub w/ bracket, 034 aluminum subframe bushings, valeo single mass cluth/flywheel setup, new control arms and axles, evo ms CAI, powderoated snazzy stuff, euro trunk, multi colors, Shaved exhaust cuttout with hidden turn down tips (in progress... again)
yup i bent the S*** outa mine haha So on the second subframe i took a dremmel with a sanding bit and went around the inside of the hole to give some extra room. and also took some sand paper and ran it along the outside of the bushing untill i could hammer them in with a wooden block so that i didnt have to use a press this time.

I moved to texas! for school. its not good here because there's just no audis around hah. all the people that do drive audis here are 40 year old women in bone stock b7's.
its cool to see this build thread! subscribed

I beg to differ. Where in Texas are you?
Watching this build!!
i like my cars to handle really well. i have my allroad setup with coilovers, adjustable upper control arms, sways with and spherical end links. i keep it corner balanced and get regular alignments. it's just one of those things i wanted to try while i had the opportunity. if they aren't too harsh i'll do the same to the rear further down the road.
i haven't fully decided on a turbo setup yet. i was originally thinking a 3076, but i'm starting to steer towards the BW EFR's now. but that probably won't be until some time next year. i'll run a ko3 and work on maintenance stuff for now before i go crazy on the engine.

started out with cleaning up vac lines, and replacing a coolant pipe that was bent when i got the engine. i just pulled the one off my blown engine and slapped it on after cleaning it up.
i got sort of a late start because my oil pan didn't come in until after three.
installed new belts, oil filter, and 034 track density motor mounts.
oil pan on and all buttoned up.
and J Ozzie showed up just in time to help me torque down the down the clutch and flywheel. i went with a 240mm FX-300 thanks to Mike Hood at Ringer-Racing.
i ran out of time, but i got the engine bay ready to receive the engine. cleaned everything, and installed the pilot bearing.
and last but not least! before Ozzie left i repo'd my shift knob

im south of houston in league city! right next to kemah. i read your thread about your engine build and was wondering who you were because i want to build the engine in my car kinda similar! pm me the names danny
I've only had one day to really work on the car. i got up early and put in about five hours before i had to leave for work.
i installed an 034 silicone breather kit, and billet PCV valve to replace all the old crusty stuff off the block.
i didn't take any pictures while i worked, because i wanted to accomplish as much as i could because of how little time i had. but, i did manage to get the engine in, and most of the wiring hooked up. i did re-locate the N80 valve to inside the fender, and removed the rest of the EVAP system that i didn't want.
and this is about as far as i got before i ran out of time. not bad for someone that's never owned a 1.8t, and barely ever worked on them

first, can someone confirm that i have the starter wired correctly before i put the AC compressor on?
and second, where does this coolant hose connect to? it's on the right side of the engine under the coolant tank. it looks like it comes from the heater core? i have one connected to the hard pipe under the intake manifold, but i can't find ANYTHING that this one would hook into.
edit: i JUST thought of something, and i haven't been out to look to confirm it, but does it connect to the rear coolant flange?
