    Evaporative Emissions Readiness help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Trying to get ready for emissions testing and my state will let me have one readiness code fail and still pass the test overall. I have a APR stage 2 so I am also failing for the cat readiness as well. I just had a 034 cat installed. Trying to figure out what is going on with the evap readiness. I have Vag-Com. No check engine light or stored codes. Is there any particular channels that I could check with Vag? Bad fuel cap maybe? Thanks for the help.

How are they failing you without having any codes for evap?

Did you clear codes or disconnect the battery while installing the cat? If so, just take the car on the highway. I forget the exact procedure but its something like: 45-55mph for 10 minutes, then 55-65mph for another 10mins. Look up the drive cycle procedure in Bentley or in the forum.

If you didn't clear codes or disconnect the battery, then check the vacuum hose that leads to the N80 (evap purge valve) it might be cracked or just deteriorated.

How can they check readiness if there's no CEL or stored codes?

What I'm getting at, is maybe there's something that the tech looking for that he can't find cause he only knows ford, dodge, Chevy, and Honda.

Also, doesn't APR Stage 2 allow you to pass cat readiness? or am I mistaken?

You are correct, Sir, as long as they are reading from OBDII and not visually inspecting. I'm guessing he has to have a visual inspection and that the tech performing said inspection doesn't know Audi's and that's why he failed evap.

Inspection stations are able to read OBD-II readiness, the same ones you can read through vag-com. Like OP said more than one fail or incomplete will result in a failed inspection. Even with visual inspection the cat is legal since it doesn't have a "off-road" use label.

APR stage 2 eliminates the check engine light so you can run a test pipe. It still fails readiness checks. This is why I am having a problem. I just replaced my N80 and put a new seal on my gas cap. I will run the car tomorrow on the highway and see if I can get that Evap readiness check to pass. That way I wont have to bother with my local APR dealer.

BTW, did you scan your readiness. (Vag-Com->Engine->Readiness). In my B6 I had to get re-flashed to a file without the "test pipe file"(basically to Stage 1+) and then added a spacer since I was getting a check engine light for the O2 sensor.

This is the drive cycle(below), just make sure its a cold startup, best if its first thing in the morning.

Yea I finally passed. I got my evap readiness to pass so I left the APR programing in stock mode and passed with flying colors. I still have one readiness fail for the cat. Colorado doesn't care. Just so everyone knows...the 034 HFC is only a two way cat, so if your state is testing for 3 gas like Colorado and California you are still out of luck. I had to put my stock cat on, because the 034 cat failed for Nox.

I replaced my N80 valve and replaced the fuel cap seal. Then I drove the car for a while on the highway for two 30 minute trips. Checked with VAG and readiness was all good for evap.
