Depends on what they are doing, or if it is all a dog and pony show.
The VCDS screens indicate the car is reading internal battery resistance and charging rates and other data which probably are enough for the controller itself to tell what kind of battery it has, and what the battery needs. But in theory...if you don't have a proper BEM for the correct battery, the car will burst into flames [sic]. It could be that the BEM coding is nonsense, and actually does nothing except prevent non-Audi partners from servicing the cars.
At least in Vegas, they'll give me good drinks while they're taking my money. Cafe Audi...not so much.
I would try to put in the BEM for the closest battery match you can find, in case it really is doing anything.
Since the numbers in VCDS didn't seem to reflect any change when I changed the BEM (itself) I'm wondering if the only way to get real data from Audi will be to push for an FTC inquiry into "restraint of competition".
