I have read a lot on the chain rattle issue as my 2004 S4 has this problem too. I would really like to know what the difference is between a V8 that does and doesn't rattle before I go to the trouble of hauling the engine out and spending a large sum of money on replacements parts. I can appreciate that the plastic chain tensioners wear but what else does to cause this. When new, I presume that no matter what, there is no rattle on start up. As the engine ages something must change to release the tension on the chains until the oil pressure gets up. May be there is no one faulty item but a combination of wear on a number of components. I would really appreciate people's views on this as I prefer to completely understand what is going on in this engine. I really like the idea of the Accusump. Before I read this thread I had thought of hooking up an external oil pump but this is far simpler and glad to see it works. Regardless of chain rattle it has got to be good for the health of the engine.
