    Drag mode sequence for Tiptronic

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know many have already demonstrated this technique before....but I noticed that there is a specific sequence for enabling it on my car....and I am sure many others are thinking that their car doesnt have drag mode because of this.... well heres a quick video illustrating my procedure. This run was a 5.4 second run to 60mph!...the tranny really shfts quickly and the revs stay below 6k to keep the engine in the powerband.....THANK YOU AUDI!!!!.....

BTW....the car is stock other than a stage 1 93oct flash.

Thanks for the info; will give it a try in my A5.

When you say full throttle, did you press the pedal past the click?

It's called power braking, every automatic does this.. It's loading up the torque converter lol

its not really "Launch" control, and the point of this is not actually the launch(or power braking)..which any car with a converter can do.....its more for the transmission to shift early and quickly....the shifts are very crisp and early in this mode unlike normal shifts. During normal shifts there is a slight delay in power delivery that occurs during the shift to soften the event, in this "drag" mode the computer uses a different shifting strategy to maintain constant acceleration by making the shifts VERY hard and fast....I wouldnt call this "launch" mode because the car launches the same regardless....but the transmission shifts completely differently.

as I said in my original post " I know many have already demonstrated this technique before" but there is some confusion as to wether or not this strategy works on every B8 Tip..and I discovered a sequence needed to access this mode on my car....so I would imagine many people havent been able to do this for the same reason....not because they dont have this mode on their car, but because they werent following the sequence to engage the mode....which is as follows:

    1. from a complete stop put the shifter in "S" or sport mode.
    2. hold the ESP button down until both ASR and ESP are completely off (roughly 4-5 seconds)
    3. hold foot brake very hard to prevent car from rolling
    4. mash the gas pedal to the floor(past the click) and wait for rpms to climb as the car builds boost
5 release the brake as the revs reach 3000+rpm and HOLD ON!...

I thought my thread on this covered the topic pretty thoroughly.... Including what was needed to do it.

The problem is you did not outline the correct sequence of steps to put the car into Drag mode

...if you dont put the car in S-Mode BEFORE disabling ASR/ESP(completely)... my car wont activate the mode....and will shift sluggish as usual.....it was bothering me because before I discovered this I couldnt figure out why sometimes it would work and sometimes not....And one other thing I noticed....the quick shifts will only occur if you come to a complete stop before accelerating....if you try to just accelerate from a slow roll the shifts are delayed and sluggish again until you stop completely and launch.

Does it work on all B8, i.e. 2010+, and also the 8 sp?

Does it stay in that mode if you keep driving it, or does it only last for one run, or until you stop etc.?

I remember that the 2009 A4 Car & Driver review had a 5.7 0-60 but all subsequent reviews were more like 6.3-6.5, and they never mentioned doing these acrobatics. So I wonder if this is only doable on a 2009, if they stumbled on it by accident, or if they forgot to do it in later reviews.

I noticed while doing it today that if you load up and then kinda let off without starting completly over, like taking your foot back off the brake and then back on it wouldn't go up in revs as high. While trying to do it again was only revving to 2k started again and went back up to 3k. I'm stock so I figure that could be in part why it did that. oh and I have an '09.

Is it just me, or is anyone else worried that little bits of the tranny will come spewing out the tailpipe doing this kinda thing? Not sure if this applies to a CVT, which I do not have btw...

haha!....I seriously doubt this harms the tranny.....I would be more afraid of breaking and axle or the like.... these trannies seem like they can handle quite a bit of power.

I didn't know about this either - pretty cool. Miles' thread is helpful too but I'm with some of you, could this be bad for the car? Obviously if you do it a lot it could do some damage, but what about the occasional push? Maybe issues with the brakes? Idk, just throwing this out there for people to ponder

You seriously doubt that torque-braking and extra hard shifts are bad for the tranny in the long run?? Are you serous???

Fyi when i had a rental 2010 A4. I masses around with the transmission like that. It was cool for few times until something snapped and made a harmful sound. The car never shifted right to the 2ND gear. So i would be careful about that, and not do any damage to your cars. These transmissions are not cheep to fix or replace!

....dont get me wrong...I know its not good to launch the car like this all the time over and over...but once in a while shouldnt be an issue...and usually in automatic transmissions its best to complete the shift as quickly as possible to prevent excessive wear on the clutches from slipping between gear changes....

I've given it a shot last night and the revs climb to 4k before launching forward like a rocket. WOW!
In my case however I would say that this is described as launch control as shifts were not short, gears would change very close to redline. Awesome feeling nonetheless.

Juat revisiting this.....Love my car....no problems yet after 12,000miles...... I am wondering if any of the Vag-Com gurus have located the alternate transmission shift modes/schedules in order to permanently activate this performance mode?....

I could be wrong, but I think VAG cannot access the TCU. It is similar to the ECU in that it is pretty isolated and the first time you tune it, you would need to pull it from the car.
