Launch Control Comparison on a 2010 6speed Tip

Sorry for the camera being upright and for almost dropping my phone on the launch. To be honest, my foot slipped off the brake a little early and surprised the hell out of me.

Hand timing when watching this video gave me a 0-60 of 4.8s.

Without Launch Control:

0-60 time of 5.5 seconds.

I'd say that launch control helps, just a little bit.

it's not launch control. his car's automatic and he did a brake stand. in other words he was making his torque converter slip

While this is mostly true, the car has a program hidden in as well that quickens the shifts and allows you to run up to about 3.5k rpm without the brake slipping.

ASR/ESP Off and put it in Sport. Foot firmly on the brake and go to full throttle. Wait about 3 seconds and woosh.

Really? I had launch control on my GTI. I didn't know they imitated it on the tiptronic trans. I'll give it try. Oddly enough, the only time I ever used launch control on the GTI was when I wanted to make sure it worked – then I never did it again, LOL.

I don't do it much; I'm afraid of the extra wear and tear it does with the harsher shifts and obvious torque caused by the brake/gas.

Just whenever I feel like showing off, or putting someone who thinks I'm stock to shame.

I gotta say, thats pretty quick for a AT w/ a stock turbo and stage 2 hardware. Could only image how much faster it would be with a ko4 or a stage 3 for that matter.

I can never get mine to launch that high. It goes up to about 2.5K and then drops back down..plus I hear noises from what I think is the brake not holding the wheels. Do you press the petal all the way down, I have never tried that only cause Im too scared to mess up the trans.

Full throttle, including the extra "kickdown" distance.

Stock it will limit how high you can rev, but the stage 2 eliminates that.

I've always been too cowardly to do this all the way as well. I've tried it a few times but get that grinding noise some have mentioned. I think the problem may have been I was in M mode. Maybe I'll get my balls back and give it another shot.

I tried it last night after finishing up work around 9 PM. The grinding noise began around 2500 RPM and I believe it was the brakes from what I can tell. I'm willing to bet there'd be an improvement in grinding reduction with new brake pads or a BBK. Either way, it was definitely a faster launch!

I have stage 1 ecu upgrade from Evotech but unable to rev up to 3.5k rpm. Does stage2 change only variables for the new components or add something new to the ECU ?

Don't you just need to turn off ASR, Anti Slip Reg? ESP is just for corning, Electronic Stability Prog. Just hit the ESP button once and turn off ASR.
Thanks to NPuter I manually changed my car to Dynamic via VCDS, vag-com on my 2009 3.2 V6. I don't have the ADS switch - computers & software is so cool - now the car has much quicker reaction, revs to redline under WOT, quicker shifts, etc. I'm going to try this launch technique today sometime! Does it matter if I'm in S1 (auto) or switch over to M1 (manual shifts)?? Thanks!

I'm not sure in your situation because you have ADS enabled, but the car is smart enough to, in "S", realize what you are doing and quicken the shifts.

As far as I know only Stage 2 removes the speed and rev limits. I could be wrong though.. also, I'm using APR software, not Evotech.

ASR goes off with the press of the ESP off button, but both ASR and ESP go off if you hold the ESP off button.

So just to be clear...pressing the ESP button only turns ESP off. But pressing and holding ESP turns off both ESP and ASR? How long do you hold it for?

You just push the ESP button once (about 1 second) and this turns off the ASR - you will see this on your dash. But if you press and hold the button for about 3 seconds it will turn both ASR & ESP off.

do you know if there is any settings thru vag-com to enable/disable launch control ? some says you need to enable it with vag-com, or is it by default with every car

Its not done through Vag-Com, but it isn't on every car. Not sure what the specific thing is that makes it have it, but I know some don't. It might be a MY2010+ thing, not sure.

Works on A4 Avant with APR stg 1, disabled ASR/ESP, foot on brake and mashed the gas and chirped some tires launching around 3200.
It was fun discovering a new feature of the wifeys car.

Anyone dropped the clutch/launched like this with the 6MT? Obviously the rpms aren't a problem, but is there something with the tip cars with the ability to run with launch control that makes it less bad on the engine/transmission/components? Definately looks like it helps for sure! Thanks all for sharing.

Just so I have this right...put my 8spd Tip in S-Mode, push and hold the "Traction Control Button" for 3 seconds to turn ASR/ESP off, depress the brake pedal HARD, Firewall the throttle to engage the kick-down switch and hold.......then revs come up to around 3,500 and the car launches...right? Do I have to side-step the brake pedal at 3,500 or does the car release the brakes for me?

Is say "Traction Control Button" because my button has a car with squiggly lines, it does not say ESP/ASR on the button. I wonder if it will work on my MY2011 Avant. Hmmm

I have the 6 speed, so not sure how the 8 speed works, but you have to release the brake yourself. I've found that the best launch is from ~3,200 RPM; no tire slipping, and a clean, hard launch. Also, the harsher shifting is where we make a lot of time as well, so I don't think this would make as big of a difference on 6mt

My B7 tip let me load the torque converter to 3k as well. This isnt launch control any torque converter automatic lets you do this..

This launch will not work in a 6MT. If you try and dump the clutch at 3k the car will fall flat on its face and practically stall. Reason being is by loading the torque converter on the tip makes the car go under load, under load you make boost and at 3k with a K03 you'll make max boost.

I agree. I don't think this is specific "launch control" like on other high performance DCTs, but rather just "power braking" the auto. This is how the auto RWD musclecars do those crazy burnouts.

I may have to try this on against my bud's S5 cab, last time we raced, I was closer than I thought to about 50. Still don't think I will beat him, but maybe after tune and hfc.

I have 2011 Avant 8sp and works fine. Turn off ASR/ESP, floor it, RPM will max at ~3k, then YOU must release the brake for launch.

S5 has DSG. 2011 has launch control and 2010 you can just pin it and it'll slip the clutch for you

Ok, here's my comparison. The thing I noticed about using launch control is the RPM's only go down to about 48-50, while without it, RPMs drop to 44-46. Reminds me of when I test drove a 335, kinda had the same power upshift.

Still seems slower than yours, Miles.
