Who daily drives with open dumps?

I'm not talking about a straight exhaust, I did that back in the day and it was loud/tolerable. But I am talking about people who drive with no cat-back on, or have their dumps open all of the time.

I'm wondering if I should start work on my cat-back setup immediately, or try and get away with running 4'x4" of straight downpipe. Assuming I don't die of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The gasses will get sucked into the cabin. Ii have the last two feet cut off my 540i while I get ready to weld up an exhaust, and I smell it inside a lot, and that's a long car. I ran a 3" downpipe to a 3' x 3" pipe on my DSM a long time ago, sounded sick, but again, fumes were annoying.
Currently available for work on european vehicles on Long Island. Stage 3 installs, motor swaps, trans swaps, timing belt jobs, valve cover gaskets/spider hose rebuilds, turbo replacements, etc. PM for info. Custom fabrication available too.

Fumes are one of my big concerns. At a dead stop I seem to be sitting in exhaust fumes. Cruising seems ok so far.

I would definitely try to finish up that exhaust ASAP. Do take a video of the current setup though, I'm sure it would be amusing to see how nice a short 4" pipe sounds.

when i drive around on low boost in the s the dumps are screaming right underneath my subframe, i had a similar setup on my srt4 also and loved it. the first car i rerouted back into the exhaust was my m3, its sneaky as hell but i miss hearing the wastegate opening up on that thing.

i had turndowns mated to the stock DP's(cut at flex joints , only pre cats intact) the flex joints rusted through and i had to come up with something. It was super loud but tolerable. i even drove tho pittsburgh from DE with them like that. I wouldnt DD if you have to sit in traffic for extended periods of time tho.

I had straight 3" downpipes for about 2 months before I finally got a ticket for improper muffler, which is a $119 fine here. It was fun at first but I quit driving it for a while because I was sick and tired of it, but didn't have time to finish my exhaust. It's now 3.5"single and I can actually stand to drive it now. I would not recommend it.

Too bad there's no way to make side pipes happen. Maybe it could, but the steering rack would be in the way.

Derrick, I drove around for about 2 months with no exhaust. My brother broke off my clamps so I was kinda forced to. Drove everywhere jersey RI MA CT. It sucked very loud always feared id get pulled over and the fumes were just horrible. From just cruising or WOT fumes do get in. Long trips always got me dizzy and gave me a huge headache once I felt that I'd pull over for a quick breather. I wouldn't suggest to ride like that for too long

I ran with open dumps for maybe a month while my catback was being made. Didn't really have a fumes problem, the car was really annoying to drive anywhere other than around town due to droning. Pretty sweet burbles and crackles occasionally on the overrun though (didn't know it at the time, but I was running rich, hence the unburnt gas getting into the exhaust and crackling).

It is sooo fucking loud and I barelyyyy made it in boost. I do have a 4" electric dump that I will eventually put in, but I'm just wondering if I can get away with this setup for a couple of weeks.

hahah.. yea i can imagine.. mines loud as shit in boost since i divorced the wastegates.. sounds like a freight train.

but i go past cops alot lately and i havent had any issues... although i am running a dealer plate.. so that helps a lot.

heres what im running with now(its not the prettiest thing) and the resonators didnt help at all with sound... i mean.. very minimal. they are only like 10 inch resonators.

I daily drive mine which has a 3inch electric cutout where the stock resonator would be. No fumes and when cops are close I can close it right up

People who live in a trailer park, or who's car was just picked apart down an ally, or people who can't afford a cat back. I can see a car with dumps at a strip as the only sensible reason to run open engine. Other then that it's stupid.
Get ur cutback made up, try to incorporate edumps, or even mechanically just so u have the option

i wasnt running open dumps but i had a HORRIBLE exhaust leak from my turbo to downpipe gasket and i would get a headache from fumes within 15 minutes of driving the car. if you drive with the windows down it makes it more tolerable. and you start to build a tolerance to it....lol i started not getting headaches

i had to drive 10 miles to get my exhaust welded and that was the worse 10 miles of my life with the car. That was with 3" dp's into hfc's with no exhaust. Crazy loud.

I ran an open dump from the external wastegate on my old Eclipse. It was only loud when I was ripping on it. I ran a 3" turbo-back with a single resonator to the back of the car for the rest of the exhaust.

    It wasn't too bad.

I happen to know that Jared gets constant complaints in our town but does pro-bono work on the right peoples cars to get away with it. His car is really, really loud. Its like a shotgun straight towards the ground and bass drums under the car. Besides, Harleys are still louder and I think from a fun standpoint with exhausts you can't get much more "because racecar" with it.

    I just wanna go fast.

Drove about 50 miles today. Still have a headache and I can't decide if it is from the noise or the fumes. On a bright note, my car rips. Part throttle sucks balls though, but that is expected with the old tune I have on it now.

No offence or anything, but there are more then enough people making even 1000whp through full exhausts.

I don't see why anyone would want to run off of downpipes or open dumps on a daily basis. Incorporating electric/boost actuated dumps or even manual ones for track use? Fine. But running around with them on the street is hella ghey.

yes but if you can spend $300 on your current exhaust. Pick up 45whp (I can show you dyno sheets) and not lose sleep over saving up $1000+ for new exhaust. It starts to make sense.. I can sell you some for your 605 car.. you need it by looking at your logs haha only kidding.

I've been contemplating for quite a while of what to do with my exhaust system... make 3" DPs and just add dumps and keep the Milltek or make a complete new system turbo back... after mauling over it, I'm going with the complete new system and no dumps... it will be quiet and loud all at the same time.

You can't truely have both worlds without dumps. If its quiet it's quiet. If its loud, it's loud.
    I respect your choice though.

I only have one 4" downpipe. It extends to about the transmission mount. I need to find some 4" bends to start the rest of my cat-back. Right now, the car sounds gnarly as fuck. However death seems imminent.

As an interim solution, try to find a 4" downturn tip to put on there so it directs the exhaust downward instead of straight into the transmission tunnel. It will make a world of difference.

my silver car has an e-dump. I wouldn't trade it for the world dude.. Ask wmi-s4 I've let him drive it around for a day or two. having both sounds is awesome! and when you open it up before a race.. they know they picked the wrong car
