    Tint: Ceramic or metallic?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm scheduled to have my car tinted at the end of the month and I'm looking for input on if I need to go with the ceramic to avoid any interference with the Nav/Radio/Sat radio etc.

I believe the shark fin on top takes care of all of this so I'm thinking it wouldn't be needed to go ceramic to avoid the interference. Let me know what input/wisdom you have to share.

My shop said the same thing to me so I just went with Ceramic. He's been in business for 20+ years and the benefits aren't worth the risk IMO (if it does interfere in some way). Go with Ceramic.

Not much out there to explain it(and I'm no expert) but here's a link on ceramic: http://www.huperoptikusa.com/ceramic-series.cfm

I believe the metallic or ceramic refers to how the film is darkened or tinted to the % desired.

Well what is it normally? Metallic? I have never inquired about this difference with my tint guy. He has tinted over a dozen cars in my family and I can't say any of us have ever experienced any interference so to speak. I have heard something more prominent with this and radar detectors though. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't ceramic also much more expensive?

Normally metallic for tint. It's going to be a $50 difference in cost for me. It seems like a no brainer for that amount of money but my wife's car will be getting the standard metallic tint.

Without getting into the technical specifics of each, Ceramic is the latest and greatest as of the last few years, approx 5. It also has a little more clarity, much more durable and most importantly blocks more of the UV but no difference at all relative to interference with nav, sat, etc.

However there is a big difference in cost. The ceramic is at least $100 to $125 more per vehicle at least thats the price difference here in So Cal from a great shop I have been using for years and someone I trust thoroughly who is also giving me a great price.

Personally I have had both. I have an MB E500 with metallic and then my 2010 A6 with Ceramic, The ceramic looks better and hands down blocks the heat moreso. If you have the extra money to spend go with ceramic. If you dont, then you'll be fine with standard film thats been used for years.

Thanks! Ceramic tint was mentioned and I immediately though of my grandmother's china set. How technology has advanced over the years.

My B7 is in the shop today for Formula One Classic (non-ceramic/non-metallic) 5% in backs (47% heat rejection), & Pinnacle ceramic 50% in fronts (49% heat rejection). First time I'm trying ceramic. Makes sense since it's mostly me driving this car alone. Why pay extra for ceramic in the backs, especially since it's so dark at 5%. We'll see how it looks/performs. For reference, I'm paying $320 total.

Formula One has a pretty cool site I just discovered where you can play with the different tints on a car:

Ceramic especially if the price difference is only $50. I was quote $250 with the front windshield for metallic and $500 for ceramic in SoCal its double the cost for ceramic.

    Thumbs up

    Follow up:
I ended up getting 35% ceramic all the way around (sans windshield of course). Here's a dirty car pic right afterward:
