Installed 4 mkVI coil packs (went to VW dealership to buy them because one of my revision R's went out PN: 06H 905 115) and opened up the gap on the plugs to .040".
Huge difference in driveability. No misfires under boost (18psi on a giac chip) and the idle is a lot smoother than before (even when the 1.8 ones were new).
Highly recommended, and it only cost me around $90 out the door. I'd definitely recommend the adapters or a hold down of some sort, as they don't seal perfectly on my awn head.

In short, if you need coil packs, do this!

Since someone has bumped this thread, I figured I'd let folks know that we are releasing our 2.0TFSI coil conversion kit next week.

This is the only kit on the market that offers an entirely bolt on and plug in solution; plug'n'play. We manufacture our own coil adapters, as well as the actual physical adapters to run the pushdown coils in the bolt on valve cover.

The kit entirely eliminates the factory ICM/POS and allows the plugin use of the 4 wire FSI coils.

Please keep an eye out for an introductory offer next week on this forum! We've been selling a kit to convert the 2.7T S4 for some time now, and are finally ready for release the 1.8t version!

    PM me for more details!

Damn, wish 034 had the plug and play conversion when I did mine! But I did use the 034 harness (gorgeous piece of harness), wired it in, went straight to NGK (6988) BKR7EIX-11 Iridium IX plugs (.044 gap) and my misfire under load disappeared, the acceleration became buttery smooth, and the car ran better all around. Now I just put a FrankenTurbo in and I'll be testing it out in the next few days, but I can already attest to the drive-ability at the very least...and 10-15hp doesn't sound unreasonable.

I have an '01. Other than using an adapter plate that fits between the coilpack and the valvecover do I need adapters or will they plug right into the harness?

I just skimmed, and I will go through it when I have more time; but is there a specific DIY to wire these up with an AEB including parts list? TIA guys.

It really depends on which wiring harness you go with, as the wires are different colors. I went with an AWP Harness, which at first I thought was suppose to be an ATW Harness. When I found out I was shipped an AWP Harness, I had to do a little more research and got lucky someone had used the same one. Here is my thread on doing the swap, with part numbers.

Excellent thread. I like the red coils for the color but wonder if the california coils may have a little stronger spark? Any one know???

I think there is a new part number that are actually Bosch coils. The thread in the B6 section has lots of discussion on the latest and greatest. People have had a bit of problem with the "cali coils" cracking on the plastic tube section. The ones with the fully metal tube have less failures it seems. Again the B6 thead will have the most up to date consensus.

I just installed the 2.0T coilpack on my 1.8T

    Big F**king deal. :P

I'm expecting something, anything. Feels exactly the same.

    About $200 wasted.

Well, not a total waste, at least I replaced the original plugs.

Just bought a GIAC chipped stage 1 ecu. After that will be the SS catback with HFC.

    That's it.

Did you gap your plugs to .38-.40mm - Without proper plugs and gapping, you wont see squat. My butt dyno after I gapped my plugs got a smoother idle and more responsive throttle and I upped my mpg's a bit.

    Plugs were gapped at 0.044"

The idle is fine and the engine runs smooth. I just don't feel any changes. The jury is still out on the mpg. Let's hope there are changes there.

Actually, the only change I feel is in my hard rock brakes after I installed SS brake lines. But that's another thread.

If your ignition system is working properly, there isn't a reason why you should feel some big performance difference.

Lot of people feel an increase in performance because their old coils or plugs were dying, or in the case of the AEB cars, perhaps an ICM was going south. The FSI coils are much cheaper to maintain and replace.

Hey guys, I have a real quick question on this install.

To clarify, I have the 034 kit with the ignition harness replacement.

I am following the instructions in the link above posted by gmx and sent to me by Max. I am ignoring the ground wire as the new harness comes with one, so that leaves me with an ECU trigger wire and a power wire for each cylinder. I have identified all the trigger wires for each cylinder so that is not an issue, and I know where to pin them. Question though, my 12V wires are all blue/black instead of red or red/green (not an issue, I know they're power as they're all the same, just curious if anyone else has run into this???).

    Question:

The power wires are NOT cylinder specific, correct? As long as I have the trigger wires in the appropriate pin/cylinder I assume it does not matter which power wire I put where? Only reason I ask is that I can figure out where they go now, but I do not know where each pin is on the new harness for each cylinder for 12V. Hopefully that makes sense...

You are correct. The difference in color doesn't matter. It is actually denoting that the circuit is a little different. The Black/Blue wire is directly switched by the key (ignition switch). The Red/Green color is switched by a relay (Motronic ECM Power Supply Relay). Both are just 12V+, just different colors based on DBC or DBW.

And the power wires are all tied together a few inches back inside the harness. They are not cylinder specific.

These are good questions, though. Always better to ask than assume.

walky where did you end up putting the chassis ground (or anyone else who has used the 034 kit)?

There are 2 grounds per coil. The factory setup has 1 from the harness and the other to the Valve cover. That's how I kept it.

hmmm, the 034 harness has 1 for the valve cover and another which was referred to as the chassis ground...it has to be bolted to something.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the 034 harness. Don't they include some instructions for ya?

I believe the factory ground point for the "chassis ground" (the grounds that go back into the harness) are grounding behind the coolant reserve bottle, on the firewall. But any good ground should work just fine. I would recommend to keep the ground structure the same, though (ground it to the chassis, and not the engine block). Ideally you would choose the same ground point as the rest of the engine sensors.

Actually now that you mention it that is where everything is grounded...I forgot about that point.

edit: I don't have enough wire to reach that terminal. My options are pretty much the firewall or the ground on the battery.

Finally I got time to do this upgrade. I used the 1J0 971 658 L cableharness which I obtained from a stealership. I put in BKR7E-11 spark plugs and my baby runs very fine now; immediate startup and smooth running all over the RPM range! The wiring around the ICM is indeed tricky; as long as you keep the incomming numbers on the ICM (I1 to I4) connected to cilinder 1 (on the front of the car) to cilinder 4 you'll be fine. So don't look at the outcoming connections E1 to E4. I found out after I did it exact the opposite way and no single firing occured while cranking :) . The schematics in the repair manual I used are somehow misleading.

Hey, my name is Brandon. I have 2001 A4 1.8tqm awm.

My coils have gone south. I want to replace my spark plugs and coils
I want to run the 2.0 coils. For that I understand you need spark plugs that are gapped .040 or .044. Which plugs do you recommend?

Second, I know to run the 2.0 coils I need adapters to space out the longer shaft on the 2.0 coil compared to the shorter 1.8 coil shaft. Now which adapters will work for my 2001 awm A4? All the stuff I read,is for aeb atw but never for my awm :(

Third, I read that the harness is different for the 2.0 coils so for every b5 A4 you need to also buy some sort of plug adapter to plug the 2.0 coil to the 1.8 harness. But with awm its a plug n play ready to go. So I dont need that harness adapters to plug the 2.0 coils to my harness cus it plugs right in?

meaning 2.0 coil + stock 1.8 awm harness = ready to go! ???

Fourth, which 2.0 coils do I need for my car? I see there's different ones. Red top and black top some have plastic shafts others are metal shafts. I want the metal shafts once cus I hear that the plastic ones are known to broke and misfire.

Last, where can I buy this parts adapters coil plugs? Does 034 make kit for awm? Or anyone out there? I didnt find anyone making a kit.for awm. And I tired searching for all this info but I just learned what I wrote here before I had no idea of anything.

Thank you so much for even reading this hopefully you can help me.

All I want is for my little A4 to run again :(

    Aww, your little A4!

1 - Chipped car? NGK BKR7E-11 (stock #5791). If not chipped, then BKR6E-11. These are the popular cheap copper plugs. There are other options you can read about.
2 - You can get adapters if you want. You can also just transfer the rubber sealing boots from your coils to the new ones so they fit snug.
3 - Harness connectors are not different. Stock AWM harness is ready to go.
4 - There are several options. Red or black BERU coils (Italy), or the back BOSCH coils (Germany, aka "06H" coils). Any of them will work.

The Bosch coils are the ones with the plastic covered shafts. The cracking is mainly due to stress from certain adapter types, and is not really an issue with the coils themselves. The Bosch coils are supposedly the strongest version (output voltage), so that is what I would recommend. People have run those with gaps up to .050". I went with the red ones because my car is red and I just had to have them, lol.

thank you so much for the reply walky!

    1. car is stock for another 2 months. will be chipped by early feb. so i guess do BKR6E-11 then replace with BKR7E-11 once im chipped in feb?

    2. will these adapters work with my car?

    http://www.audizine.com/classifieds/...anew-2a&cat=20

it says for aeb? not for awm?
why does aeb need the spacers and awm doesnt need it?

    3. perfect!! thank you!!

    4. i want the metal ones and red.. im still confused...ugh dude im sorry hope im not bothering you.

yeahh my little a4 is dead in my drive way. put my dads scanner got to code more than one misfires and misfire cylinder four. the coil is complete dead i unpluged it while it was running and rpms stayed the same no change on the motor sound. i want it to be over so im replacing all four and to 2.0 as i hear it runs better. all of these happen because my valve cover gasket is leaking and so oil got to the coils/spark plugs

You don't need adapters for the AWM. Just play with the boots to suit your comfort level. Here are the TSI coils on my car, no adapters.

My old turbo setup, but using pic for reference

With the AWM valvecover, you only rely on the friction between the coilpack and the VC to prevent the coilpack from popping out? I have an AEB vc so I bought adaptors for the coils. Then I ordered an AWM vc and a coilpack hold down kit from ECS. I must've mixed up everything here. It seems I can only use the adaptors with the AEB vc. Then the hold down kit goes with the AWM vc. Am I right?

    1. You'll be fine to go with the 7E's for a bit, even if not chipped.
    2. Yes, those will work for you car, although they aren't expressly necessary. The AEB and ATW "need" them. The AWM doesn't need them, but they provide more security. Most people just use the rubber boots from their old coil packs instead of buying the expensive adapters.
    3. Yessir.
    4. Your link is to the correct coil packs. The red 2.0T packs are 06E-905-115E. Cheapest place to get them genuineaudiparts.com (known around here as GAP). They should be around 16 bucks per coil plus a little to ship.

Got this. Thanks! I almost thought that these adapters are totally useless. But since I don't have old coil packs, these adaptors will be useful for me.

AWM and AEB valve covers are different, and use different components to run the 2.0 coil pack. Or do like me, and just play with the rubber boots for the AWM valve cover.

2.0 coil on left, 2.0 coil with added boot on the right. That was my comfort level.

Pictures really help a lot. Is it also true that you have to sand/grind off some metal on the vc where the coilpack goes in? Something about the 2.0T coil couldn't go in straight away.
