Where is the best place to purchase an OEM roof rack? I see the ECS has them at the good price but it will take over a month to get it since they order them from Germany? Does anyone know of any other places that sell them at a cheaper price than the dealership?

    are you set on OEM?

i recommend whispbars which, imo, are far better than OEM (with the OEM look). I got mine here: http://www.orsracksdirect.com

great service and price plus they are right in VT so you will get them next day

this.. whispbar FTW! i run them on my S4- they're quiet, and way lower/more sleek than OEM. i had OEM on my past 2 cars and they made a lot of wind noise and stuck up much higher.

I think OEM sit a bit high. I've very happy with my Thule aero bars, they're quiet and look OEM.

whispbars are quieter, easier to install, cheaper, and have more of an OEM look than the aero bars from thule

I like how the OEM one comes withe rubber cushion on the mounting brackets that connect inside the doors. Also it has less contact area on the car then the others.

Not sure I follow. The way they connect to the car is the exact same no matter what brand you buy. They also all have protective padding

That little rubber padding that is on the rack will wear at your paint after a while. I had roof racks on my B5 s4 and it did do some damage to the paint.

I ordered mine from Suncoast parts. Best price I found (at least then) doing a quick on learn search. Better than the dealership by a good amount.

They do ride high, but are a lot less noisy than the factory BMW bars I had on my E90 M3. Wind noise, yes. Does it sound like a 727 landing on top of my car, no.

Audi bars are a bit of PIA to install, but I have used mine already and they are fine.

    Past
E90 M3 - I still hear the distant howl of the V8......; B7 RS4 - I hardly knew you; B7 S4 Avant - Uber Wagen; Z4 - driving it was the most fun I had in a car (at least until then) with my pants on.

The oem ones have a rubber pad/sheet thar goes in between the metal bracket that grabs inside the door. The yakima/thule don't appear to have that. Also the base that sits on the roof is smaller on the oem one. I'm thinking that the lesser contact area on the car might be better.

Does the yakima use the mounting holes in inside the door?

They all have that padding on the bracket. 2 per bracket and yes, they use those holes.

Also, i cant speak for the size difference but i cant imagine its that far off from each other. Either way they both touch the paint so its a moot

Also now that i think about it.

The larger surface area spreads the friction out more, it does not create any more friction. So its better to have a larger footprint.

I have Yak round bars. Not too loud and love them. The attachments for the round bars seem cheaper than for the aero bars. I had clear bra out under where the feet sit to stop any damage to the paint.

This thread from the B8 A4 section covers the whispbar and thule aeroblade. Cant go wrong with either one. I ended up choosing the aeroblades after compairing both side by side in person. I might cut the bars shorter at some point
