My 2011 B8 A4 Avant just gave me the low oil warning. I've only driven 3,000 miles since purchasing the car in January.
I've had the Stage one Revo most of that time, but haven't been driving hard. My car is CPO and covered for a few more years,
so I don't want to jeopardize the warranty and be sure I can get this fixed. I've got an oil consumption test scheduled at the
dealership and will re-flash the ECU beforehand. Any advice from other folks that have had this issue?
    Thanks...

Oh don't get me wrong, I agree with you that 2 weeks is a long time. In fact, I was only told it would take "up to a week" when I dropped it off. But what can you do... If I had a shitty loaner then it probably would have bothered me more.

Some 2009 A4 have an issue with burning oil, the pistons are too small for the cylinders and after time the ring gaps line up so the oil pukes out of the cylinders. Dealership should be doing a oil weight test (weighing the oil they put in, you drive 1000 km then they drain and weigh again) if it is below the tolerance for a 2009, pistons are replaced (if you have warranty).

sorry if this has already been mentioned in this thread, did not want to read 50+ pages

So should I demans carbon cleanup for after my new Pistons are in to clean up all the junk and oil that was all over the inside of the engine? I heard that they did that on occasions?

so just like almost everyone who owns an Audi I was losing oil constantly even after getting oil changes, my local shop recommended using Moly so far I have not seen loss of oil.

    Does 2.0T still burn oil??

Question I have is whether the 2014 a4 has fixed the oil burning issue??

Soon to be trading in my 2010 prestige 6M. It's been the perfect commuter car. Would like to get the same car with 0 miles on it but not if it will eat a quart every 1k miles.

Anybody know if they still have an issue with excessive oil burning??

    Thanks

The 2.0T will always burn a little oil. They just have better control, if you can say control, of it now. To my knowledge the 2014 models do not burn excessive oil like the others. But I can not say that they might later on in the life of the car.
I only work for Audi, I don't drive one.

This may have been stated earlier but I did not read through all 50+ pages of this thread...

Did Audi make any manufacturing changes to the 2.0T engine to address oil losses in 2014?

    Thanks for the reply.

If it burns oil take it in and they fix it. They fixed mine about 30k ago and its been great ever since, I hadn't noticed that I changed my oil back in September and I went over 10k on the oil and my MMI showed yesterday it's first drop, still not even a quart down. I think they fixed it.

I purchased a 2011 A4 sedan March 1 of this year, CPO with about 33,000 miles on it. I brought it to Audi Mission Viejo (not where I purchased it) after 2 weeks to have the back up camera repaired as it had stopped working. The Service advisor suggested I allow them to do an oil consumption test! They did part 1 (ECU, PCR valve, crankshaft oil seal & pulley and crankshaft damper) and said to let him know when if/when the oil light came on. Yesterday it came on so today I brought it in, they gave me a '14 Q5 loaner and just called to tell me they were replacing pistons & rings!
I'll report back after the work is done but, I have to say that I am very impressed with the quality of service I'm receiving from Dan at Audi Mission Viejo! They can't seem to do enough for me! He also told me that there was a service contract attached to my VIN that covers all service for an additional 2 years!! The dealer I bought the car from didn't even tell me about that!

Just curious, were you aware of the car burning oil before you brought it in? Was there history of oil consumption in your cars's service records prior to your ownership? Also, do you happen to know your build date?

I don't know the build date (where would I find that?). However, the in service date is Nov. 2010. As far as oil, I was not aware of any oil issues prior to them mentioning it to me. I will check with the service dept when I pick it up to see if there were previous consumption issues.

My 2014 hasn't burned any oil since I've gotten it. At the first oil change the MMI still reading completely full. I am now at ~8.2K and the MMI is still full. I know it will vary car to car so YMMV.

Honestly I'm a bit surprise that it hasn't dropped any. My B5 burned about 1 quart every 5K miles up until about 45K miles when it basically stopped burning oil.

There should be a decal inside your driver's door jam to the bottom right. Mine is 4/11. I am at 18,500 miles. So far I haven't had any oil burning issues (biting my tongue). I'm just wondering if Audi discovered the problem mid year (the tsb says through 2011) or if I've just been lucky so far?

I had the the shop that did the Revo tune reset the ECU back to stock on my CPO 2011 B8 A4 Avant. Apparently the dealer didn't look for that or it didn't show up - much to my relief. They did part 1 of the oil consumption test (ECU, PCR valve, crankshaft oil seal & pulley and crankshaft damper). I'm at 29000 miles. The dealership has been great. I mentioned my sunroof was creaky and they replaced the frame while they had it of the consumption test. All covered under warranty. Got a nice 2014 A4 loaner and when I picked up my car it was washed inside and out. Will see what happens in the next 630 miles...

My car has 53000 miles and still no issue, of course I've only had it since 48000 miles! I know I'm out of warranty but I heard that the dealership sometimes covers it off their "goodwill" warranty... My question is if I get a tune (since I'm out of warranty) would that ruin the chances that they would maybe help me out if I encounter the oil consumption issue?

FWIW, my build date is 3/11 and I am now at 27,500 without oil issues.........................so far. The MMI is down most of a quart at each 10K service but that is more than tolerable.

A few 2012's have suffered from oil consumption. Audi started with the resolution in late 2012. So the late 2012's and on don't have an issue..... yet.

Has anyone gone back for oil consumption after their piston/ring replacement?

I had mine done 35,000km ago and i'm starting to burn oil again.

I do not know the VIN range. Sorry.

I have seen it happen on the belt drive 2.0t. Since the piston rings were replaced they probably came out with updated ones again. I have done the same car 3 times for this issue. The customer wasn't happy that it took 3 times to fix the issue but it was all covered under warranty so he didn't have to pay, that made it easier to deal with. They did have bad ring sets out a little while ago. They put two of the same rings and the scraper ring instead of 2 different rings and the scraper ring. That was one of the replacements I did again. How long ago was that replacement, time-wise? What year is your Audi?

at 55,000KMs I did an oil consumption test and failed at 0.98L/1000Km. They did the PCV, Software and Piston and Rings in the same time.
It was still burning oil but only around 0.35L/1000Km from my log book but lately it's started to go up again. My measurement gives me around 0.6L/1000Km.
I'm at 92,000Kms. When I called the dealership they told me I need to wait till I hit 95,000Kms for it to be free. (40,000Kms) but I'm wondering what will happen when I do?

Just an update. Dealing with Audi Canada here..

Yesterday I picked up my car after the stage 2 oil consumption test. They told me it burns somewhere along the lines of 1.65QT/1L which is what I was expecting, this is after the phase 1 fix (seals, ECU, etc). they said they'll make a case with Audi for me and get back to me. My car's been out of Warranty since 60,000KM (I'm at 90k now). The same day, my local Audi dealer (Marks Motors in Ottawa) called me to tell me that they have all the records for the car across Audi dealers but they cant seem to find a single oil change between 70k and 90k, I bought my car at 85k with an oil change done at local BMW dealer where I bought it. I got really stressed since they said without a complete oil change record Audi of Canada would not accept it. They followed up with a call within a couple of hours saying that the original owner of the car actually bought Audi Care which is covered till 70k so I don't need to provide proof of oil change, my 85K oil change will do.

    Relief!!!

Today I got a call from them with a response from Audi of Canada: They will cover 70% while the dealer will cover 5% of the Pistons/rings job + I get a loaner. I will cover $900 or so. They said they will do a bore test and if the pistons are in a very bad shape it would be a new engine for me :)

I am VERY impressed with Audi of Canada and my local dealer, Marks Motors. Although its disappointing that I still have to cover some of the costs, I will call Audi to see what they can do or maybe speak to my dealer further regarding what they're covering. Both Audi and Marks Motors of Ottawa have been a pleasure to work with and I can't wait to see if its a new engine or just Pistons.

This is the first post out of Canada so all the Canadians out there, there may be hope! It might have helped that I personally called Audi of Canada first before I got the results of the Phase 2 test.. I gave my ticket number to the dealer and they sent off the results and attached it to that case number, might be worth a try for the rest out there having this issue.

Cheers! Will keep you guys updated on results..
So the car's still at the dealer waiting to be fixed. Got an update call today (week later) saying the work on my car has started and so far I only need a chain tensioner ($65) on top of the pistons and rings, of course without doubt I said do it since the engine's already cracked open and it was right there and cheaper to fix now than later. They did say car should be ready mid next week or so. So far, I'm happy with the progress despite the crappy Subaru crosstrek I was rented out instead of a loaner that was a complete downgrade from my 2.0T :(.

Hoping I don't get shocked with the bill despite Audi covering 80%. Will keep you updated, but again, Marks Motors of Ottawa has been great to work with.

I'm just wondering if Audi discovered the problem mid year (the tsb says through 2011) or if I've just been lucky so far?
Mine was produced in 10/2010. It was burning a quart every 3k miles when I had stage 1 done. That was over a year ago. It has been 5-6k per quart since then. I have 38k miles on it. I'm debating with myself whether to see if a dealer will do Stage 2 given that it doesn't have a severe problem and because it has the Stasis tune, or just keep my fingers crossed that it won't get worse. It hasn't changed since Stage 1 16k miles ago.

Took car in for Stage II yesterday and got a call from dealer confirming that I'm consuming over 2/3rds quart per 1000miles. So they're moving forward with new pistons, etc. I'm at 64k miles for reference.
They gave me a 2012 A4 Avant (w/adaptive suspension) as a loaner in the meantime - pretty nice, tho its an auto-8spd. The dealership has been GREAT throughout the process of Stage I & II, which is a relief. I am very happy with their service and professionalism.
I'm interested to know if anyone who has had the stage II completed after dealing with the condition for a long period of time noticed any change or improvement in performance when they got their car back? Any chance it cleaned up the spotty lag, wavering rpms or throttle response? Just curious... Either way, I'm really looking fwd to getting my car back soon. Dealership said it should be over a week, b/c I'm 2nd in the queue.
