**yes, I stole this from another model forum **

So there's quite a few of you with custom cat-backs/turbo-backs from the treads I've seen. I think it'd be nice to consolidate all of your setups here for future (and my current) reference.

If you have a custom exhaust please list the following to keep it coherent and thorough. Try and anawer all the below so people have less questions.

-Downpipes (gutted Y, N, or Both):
    -Size of piping:
    -Mid-muffler/resonator Y or N (brand & model):
    -Rear muffler (brand & model):
    -Tips (size, model, and brand):
-Complete price (if you don't mind, and maybe where you bought the parts):
    -Comments:
-Sound description (and clip if you have one):
    -Pics:

Whatever else you want to post about it, feel free

Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

Good, I was thinking about doing this. Never did it though, obviously, LOL.
Should get a sticky if people will participate..

    01 2.8 Quattro

    -Stock manifolds/down pipes/ no gutting.
-2.5" straight pipes in place of factory resonator. All other piping stock.
-Remus sport label, for C5 2.4/2.8 Quattro
    -3.54" tips, come on Mufflers.
-Mufflers 371.01 each, pipes for res were $100 with labor.
-So 842.02 total. Yeah, not quite the cheapest way to go...

    But sounds Tits!!
    Heres a pic,

And clips to back up my above statment..

Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

Ok so just spitballing here, but i have been noticing how mean the new S4's look with their quad exhausts and was wondering if anyone has quad exhaust that is pretty integrated with the rear valance? Also I wonder if there is any way to make the exhaust look like the new GT-R, so its sort of in the valance rather than hanging down from it. There might not be enough room for that... Anyway if anyone has any pics of anything mentioned above please post some pics.

Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

After a few hours at the exhaust shop yesterday, its done!

-Downpipes (gutted Y, N, or Both): Stock
    -Size of piping: Stock
    -Mid-muffler/resonator Y or N (brand & model): None
-Rear muffler (brand & model): Magnaflow "Magnapack" #10415
-Tips (size, model, and brand): Stock
-Complete price (if you don't mind, and maybe where you bought the parts): All in all it was ~300, I had the resonator removed previously for about $75(Sandia Muffler, ABQ, NM), and then $225 when I had the rest of it done(Bud's Muffler, Denver CO).
-Comments: Center resonator removed, and then Magnaflows replaced the mufflers, to stock tips for that OEM look. Sounds way better in real life, my camera has a way of making any exhaust sound like shit.

Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

my custom borla. just mufflers and tips were 500. piping was another couple hundred. did 2 1/4" to cats and left resonator in. nice and quiet but sounds great. no drone!! but soon fabricating 3" dp's to 2/5" flex joint and highflow cats so will be doing 2.5" all the way to the mufflers with most likely straight through magnaflows as resonators to hopefully quiet it down. anyone have any suggestions for 2.5" resonators?

I don't know the guy that installed it did it for free because he didn't want people to be able to see the mufflers easily from the back since they poked out.

so far there's a lot of variety. I want a system which is quiet and fairly priced. The Borla's seem right but what are my other options.

Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

I love mine. I do have the stock cross over/x up right after the cats.. but straights in place of the res.

I just wonder why it seems S4s and A4s with 2.8s always seem to sound better than A6s. Confuses me.

    this sounds nice though, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01rAj...eature=channel
2.5 cats back, x-pipe no res, and bullet performance mufflers...

But then I love this set up, straight pipes, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCobm...eature=channel which is why I did mine like I did.

Actually, it doesn't. Purpose of an x-pipe is to balance the exhaust pressure between both sides (this can also be achieved by headers). The passing exhaust (in the right side) causes a vacuum in the 'just fired' (left) side (and vice-versa). This will reduce the back-pressure and improve performance. Don't get me wrong, you could reduce the back-pressure too much and actually make it worse, but in general they will improve performance. It falls under the same principle of headers vs. equal length headers.

here is a quick article if you don't believe me.

    http://www.streetdirectory.com/trave...ore_power.html

...And both pipes pictured above will do the same thing. The only difference is that the top has outlets at an angle. If you look, both pieces have both pipes passing straight thru the X at the same angle, just different for different apps.

x pipes are good on n/a v8's and whatnot, but turbo engines prefer no backpressure.

Re: Officially Unofficial custom exhaust thread

No he doesn't further your point -- point is turbos send exhaust stream swirling out and x-pipe causes collisions (that's bad). I think our resident Stage 3 stage expert (Endeee) has run the experiment both ways on his, and the intrusion of x-pipes does not seem to matter with performance (vs direct, dual exhaust advantage in theory) and he prefers the deeper sound with x-pipe. That is the other effect -- noise cancellation with colliding sound waves. So they do no harm (can't improve over true dual exhaust in terms of performance), but they do affect sound.

are you talking about the 4.2? Because then yes, an x pipe is beneficial. But not on the 2.7T.

Actually, he does further my point. the original comment was "And provide better performance" (talking about straight pipe), which you have also just agreed is FALSE. Therefore, both you and the other poster have helped my point. I will agree that they may not increase performance on a turbo, but they certainly do not harm it. I also have not been able to find any documentation that show performance w and w/o an x-pipe on a turbo'd car. They may not help while boosted, but I would find it very hard to believe that they provide no benefit to your pre-spool performance. "It sounds better" isn't fact, its opinion. Some will like the sound with the x-pipe and some without, but performance is not harmed.

Think about this for a second. Do you think the power hungry germans, who fitted the car with 17 different mufflers, put an x-pipe in for performance or to help quiet it down more? Does it make a difference in stage-3, I dunno. Did your 2.7t come off the line as a stage-3, no.

man you are just twisting my words.

go do some more research before talking shit. an x-pipe on a big v8 is beneficial. but not on a turbocharged car, like the 2.7T.
And you say its beneficial before the turbo spool on the 2.7T. Have you driven the 2.7T? The K03's spool at about 1500rpms, very little pre-spool rpms for it to make any difference.

I had no intentions of jacking the thread, I was in here and saw a severely misinforming post and thought it right to help straighten out the misconception (moved it here.) I'm working on doing my own exhaust and will post my results it's finished.

Apparently didn't read mine correctly either. What we are saying is that x-pipes do not help with turbos, but are often helpful for n/a V-8s. One case found they "did no measurable harm" on 2.7t. And yes, sound is in ear of beholder.

And of course, should point out that the "power hungry Germans" did NOT put an x-pipe in the 2.7t. Has dual exhaust. The end. (sorry, 2.stlouie)

i thought it had a true dual exhaust stock, but it doesnt. i just looked. however, my guess is that it is for quieting down the exhaust(afterall, it is meant to be more of a luxury cruiser)

That's not really a true x-pipe (joined, however). I think my Milltek is similarly set up with pipes parallel but joined for support (maybe some sound cancellation effects, though?).

total exhaust bill so far is 73.23$ Removed everything from the rear axle back and piped with 2inch and then 2inch-3.5inch tips 8.5inches long. not all welded together yet but I am working on it. Debating on removing the resonator also... but since I got apr tuned my car got louder.
