How big a deal is it to remove the oil pan? 1.8T QM

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just wondered if it is a big deal and what to consider before removing it, parts buddy at audi told me it is common practice for them to replace the oil pump screen and pipe when doing a sludge job, I just replaced a few PCV components and cleaned all the metal pipes out (BTW Walter Matrix cleaner is insane for sludge removal, it cleaned everything out!),

I ran a seafolam treatment thru ( crank, intake, fuel) but I wonder if it would be vetter to drop the pan and see for myself.

72K miles on the car. Runs alot better nnow though.
PARTS FOR SALE: LW Crank Pulley, OEM injectors, ABT rep grill, OEM Intercooler, PM me.

If you drop the subframe, its easy .. if you dont, have fun!

FYI to drop the subframe you have to have an engine bay support stand

Grrrrrrate!, can I get away with only dropping it a little, in other words, disconnect the shocks at the top and all the sub frame bolts, but not disconnecting the brake lines etc.

Would you really have to remove the front end?
I know when I replaced my motor mounts I got the engine up about as far as you did in the pictures and by only removing the snub mount, losening the motor mount bolts then jacking.

...should allow enough room to get the pan out, although I've never tried it.....

I can remove my front end in about 10 min, so i would take it all out to make it easier.

The pan needs to clear the subframe, it cant without the front end off

bummer, just did the TB, and had it all off, might wait a little bit, if I cleaned out all the PCV and seafoamed it (car had reg oil changes etc all it life), I am hoping I should be OK noot to worry too much about the oil pump screen....right??

Re: How big a deal is it to remove the oil pan? 1.8T QM

Run some SeaFoam and Engine Flush. Not worth the trouble unless something is wrong. Just the common practice of frequent oil changes, and you should be fine.

I had the pleasure of changing my oil pan after my jack dropped the car and cracked it. Removing it involved dropping sub frame and then cleaning up the old gasket. NOT fun.

Here is what it looks like out of the car just to give you a feel of what you're up against:

cool I feel better, I will probably do another seafoam in the summer/fall, I am pretty religious on the oil changes (every5k), and run synthetic 0-40.

Sorry dude, but I have only pictures of B5's. It's not for the purpose of getting "exact" details, but just to give you an idea of what it looks like.

It's like asking to see a picture of boobies of a Blonde chic, but I send you a picture of boobies on a Latina chic instead because that's all I have available at the time. And you're complaining?

    DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    unless you HAVE to.

    the job is a PITAx10000

i unbolted the whole front end and engine mounts(super easy)

jacked up engine.....took me like 4 hours to get the pan out because there wasnt enough clearance finally it came out broke the plastic baffle thing on the inside of the oil pan and yeah

eff that i will never do that job again(unless i hit a dip really hard and crack my pan again)

if you do it good luck!

not feelig to hot about ripping it off, I will most liely remove the cam cover (again) in the spring and inspect, I cannot remember last time if it was sludgy (I imagine I would have noticed it if it was). I only got concerned when the pcv pipes were 3/4 clogged up.

I am having this same problem, I've tried bumping the engine to align the slot with the bolt about 20 times with no luck, any ideas would be extremely helpful

Any blockage in the oil pickup that will cause problems will be directly seen in the oil pressure readings. Therefore, if you are reasonably sure that your engine is clean, but are still freaking out that your screen may be clogged (or clogging), just install an oil pressure gauge. I got a stepper motor gauge off ebay for like $80.

I think this is an especially good idea if you plan on doing (or have done) engine flushes like AutoRX or Seafoam or Diesel fuel or what-have-you. Those job of those products is to loosen the crap-ola in 'jo engine. However, if the chunks of crap are too big to go through the screen, they can get caught in it and make the problem worse (ie: a cleaner top end, but a more clogged screen). A simple gauge is excellent insurance. It gives me so much reassurance to look at that gauge and see plenty of nice, happy oil pressure.

The Auto-RX product supposedly uses lanolin and other ingredients to slowly soften the sludge and dilute it into the oil for capture by the filter (not the screen). It should theoretically be able to soften and rinse away the deposits that are already in the screen. Seeing first hand what clogs those screens, I think that's a long shot.

    Bumping this up.

When re-installing the pan, where do I put the RTV sealant? On the block or pan? Inside out outside edge, or does it matter?

On the pan, on the inside edge, dont over use and let it cure over night before filling fluids/start it up.

Oh yeah, the RTV wont cure if the temp is too low.

You don't use RVT. You use OEM Victor Reinz Sealant.

    http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-...iming/ES11836/

Instructions are on the bottle. It cures in a couple of minutes, but that should be more than enough time to get the pan back on. Basically, just apply it around the entire edge of the pan (you just want to create a seal, so no overdoing it because it will goop out the sides if you do) and bolt the pan back onto the block.
