Question 2.7T Throwing some engine and tranny codes. Can anyone help??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just picked up a 2002 2.7t quattro. It's giving me these four engine codes

16502 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Signal too High
    P0118 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17887 - Brake Boost Vacuum System: Mechanical Failure
    P1479 - 35-00 - -
16815 - Warm Up Catalyst; Bank 2: Efficiency Below Threshold
    P0431 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16805 - Warm Up Catalyst; Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold
    P0421 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Also the transmission is giving me this one P0741.

I already checked the Ross Tech website for explanations, but don't know exactly what parts should be replaced (what's a warm up catalyst)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Regards,
    Andy

Thanks for your replies buddy...For the brake vaccuum can I perform the diagnostics myself? What tools/equipment would I need?
Can the cats be hollowed out?
I haven't cleared any codes yet because I wasn't sure how to do that.

    Thank you for your help.

I read the title and was worried you were going to say P0741.

Sorry to tell you but you need a new torque converter most likely. I would say its probably a 75%+ chance. Some try to change fluid, as did I, but just wasted 500 bucks.

There is a TON on here and AW about this just search 'P0741'

I know you will ask cost so
    - 10-12 hours labor
    - 500-850 for the part

    - total TC replacement 1400-1800
    - dealer prices will be higher

    Thanks guys.
Despite all these codes, the car idles, runs and shifts smooth. I'm not too worried. What bothers me the most is the cats rattling. Does this have pre and post cats? Has anyone ever hollowed theirs out?
Do you guys know how hard it is to change the coolant temp sensor?
    Thanks again,
    Andy

Trust me, I would be more concerned about the P0741 which means you need a new torque converter, I wouldn't drive the car until a new torque converter is installed because it will lead to needing a new tranny. Worry about this one first and then take care of the rest.

x2 to that. I love when the common response it im not worried becasue it drives fine.

It will drive fine but your clutches inside the TC are not locking up therefore wearing down, therefore releasing metal parts and such into and throughout your transmission.....

Do you want to fix a TC or TC & Transmission??

Do research and you will be enlightened.

Did you also replace the Converter pressure valve? Or just need a new TC?

I'm getting the same code on mine

    thanks

I just replaced the torque converter, flushed out the old slug out of the trany and put new ATF from the audi dealer. Its about 5k miles now without any issues.. it seems like this is a common issue for the a6 click here.

Your precats are out. you can replace the cats or try the fouler techniques. I tried the spark plug fouler and it was hitting the fire wall. The schmidt wayne angled foulers are the way to go.

The diode and resistor methods to fool the ecu never works. Another option is to reflash the ecu to ignore the secondary o2 sensors.

Re: 2.7T Throwing some engine and tranny codes. Can anyone help??

P0741...like others have said, you need a new torque converter. I had mine replaced last year, it cost roughly $2000 at my local independent shop. The car will shift just fine, however the transmission isn't catching, if you continue to drive with your current TC you're going to end up ruining your entire transmission.

    Best of luck
