45 profile snow tyres on allroad

Here in New Zealand it's nigh on impossible to get 55 profile snow tyres but I can easily (and cheaply) get 225/45x17 for my winter pleasure. I have a spare set of a/r rims to swap over seasonally. A 45 profile tyre is 6.6% smaller than standard. Have any of you experienced living with that much smaller tyre and is it a problem?

I run 225/45/17s for winter snows. Wider tire is not your friend in snow. Lower profile is not smart with NJ potholes in winter. 225/45 seems fine for here.

I have had no problems with my snows at 255/40/18.

same here, I run Pirelli snowsport 240's 255/40/18. goes through the snow like mad. But I think he's more concerned about the difference in diameter. 45's will work just fine, but expect your speedometer to be fast about 5 mph.

Re: 45 profile snow tyres on allroad

There are very separate issues: wider is worse in snow. (1) Even the "optimum" performance width (there's an argument) is not what you want in snow. Somebody may do ok with some wide spec, but narrower will be better than wider in snow. (2) Low profile is problem with poor roads. And (3) aspect ratio (35, 40, 45, etc.) is ratio (%) of sidewall to width. Wide tire with higher aspect = bigger roll diameter and speedo is out of whack.

Re: 45 profile snow tyres on allroad

It is just diameter difference that concerns me and that doesn't sound too much of a problem, from what you guys say. I only drive from home 16km up a mountain to work/ski and back in winter anyway. Too busy to drive anywhere else! Anyway it's summer here now so it's time for another cold beer and a barbeque, or should I go for a swim first....

like he said they will work and the speedo will be off about 5mph or so but all 4 tires need to be the same overall diameter so you dont f up your torsen diff.

You can set your tire size through VagCom so it can compensate.
