differences between the A4 1.8 and TT engines

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so my friend has been looking for an Audi TT for a while and he came across one on craigslist with a blown engine. he asked me if my spare 1.8t engine for my 98 A4 would easily fit in that TT. i didnt know the answer so im posting it here, im sure one of you guys knows.

obviously the engine mounting is different, so you would need an intake mani from the transverse engine, and exhaust mani probably. what else? ecu? harness? how would the transmission work (assuming both are manual trans. and both quattro)? thanks guys.

the transmission in the TT is fine, my question is would an AEB block bolt up to it? obviously an A4 transmission wouldnt fit in a transverse engine mounted car.

Re: differences between the A4 1.8 and TT engines

The block would physically bolt up to the TT transmission, yes, using the TT flywheel and clutch.

All ancillaries, including mounts, both manifolds, oil filter housing, timing belt cover, oil pan and oil pick-up, alternator, PAS / aircon pumps and brackets etc.

Of course, the TT injectors would have to be retained; it'll run, but won't make the original TT's power - camshaft profiles are different on 210 / 225PS engines, and the CR is lower too than the AEB's.

To be honest, your friend's best off sourcing another TT motor, otherwise he'll have a second blown engine - with the AEB's higher CR, there's a risk of melted pistons, unless your buddy's looking to reduce the original boost settings, or change the pistons.

Out of interest, what's the story with the original TT engine?

I know you say it's blown, but what are we talking?

Unless it's spun bearings, damaging the block, dropped a valve and gouged a cylinder, or worse a rod has punched through the cylinder block, it's best to rebuild.

if I'm not mistaken, the TT is a transverse mounted engine, A4 is longitudinal. Hook-up will be difficult, and plumbing will be pretty tough too. Will the mounts line up?

Wrong, you use TT accessories, but if the blocks are the same (01' and up A4) then everything bolts right up...

Now to the OP, the 98' A4 block is the 058 style block, that is not compatible with the TT, since the TT is the newer style 06A block. Even though it will bolt up, its not the right block for the car
