Smoked rear lights for Allroad - How to remove?

OK, if you go OEM smoked, or tint your existing, either way we're going to have to remove them. Is it pretty easy to remove the tails?

DoobiesDaddy had his overlayed with a film. I think he had it done at a window tint shop but you would have to ask him about it to be sure.

check out johnstintedtail they use spray to tint your taillights with clearcote so it can be polished and waxed like the rest of the car. They can make any shade you want from light to extra dark and can even color match it. I wouldnt recomend using film.

Yup, I did it with film. When I was researching doing mine I was not able to find any tinted tail lights for the allroad on the internet or local. There was a guy (johns tinted tails), I can find the link if you want, that offers to paint your oem lights, but he need you to send them to him on the east coast, wait for them to be painted and then he would return them. Too long of a turn around for me as I use my car every day and it would be unusable with out the tail lights. Be very careful if you go with the ones in the link above, as I think they do not fit. I am pretty sure that the c5 avant tails do not fit the c5 allroad. I had my window tint shop do the my tails and they did a great job! About $100 out the door.

Saw a product today on TV called Night Shades made by VHT that is a spray on. Don't really know anything about it but it looked pretty easy to use.

MYDWAGON, we must of posted at the same time.

Ha.It's pretty easy.I used a real fine sand paper and the cleaned it with denatured alcohol.Just do fine coats until you achieve the darkness you want.

Re: Looking for smoked rear lights for Allroad

Only problem with spray vs. film in my opinion is that if you get a fix it ticket for the tinted tails, you will have to buy new lights to get the ticket dismissed if you did the spray/sand route. If you go the film route then you can just peel the film off and you are good to go.
I live in California, so I have to think of this as CHP is ticketing fairly aggressively these days.

I VHT'd mine. Turned out ok, just make sure that you spray them in direct sunlight so every spot is visible. I had a little trouble making each light equal.

LAMIN-X ...it's a protective film that can take a beating and will protect your expensive lights..LAMIN-X is used on the R8 and R10 Lemans race cars...dont lose the value of your expensive oem lights by permanently destroying them with a can of spray tint..... Also, if the popo gives you a hard time--- you can easily remove them.

If you don't like them.... you can easily remove them

I have sprayed many tail lights and removed the paint with lacquer thinner. You wouldn't have the slightest hint that the light had been sprayed. I have done this to my cars, and friends cars. I have spayed my Jeep GC, Allroad, and A4. I have also done my friends 4Runner, BMW 330xi, and Subaru Legacy. Before I sold my Jeep I took a sock dipped in lacquer thinner and rubbed off the black paint. Then threw a coat of wax on top, and sold the Jeep the next day! Although I didn't sand the lights before paint, and I used a gloss black, no enamel used! Otherwise I believe that the paint wouldn't come off.
Although Lamin-x is a good choice. But to dark for what I wanted to pull off.
    Best choice Johnstintedtails.com
Luckily Idaho has no tint laws!
    Here are mine.

Take the covers back unplug the connector to the lights and there are 3 or 4 10mm nuts that hold the lights on remove those and pull out the light.

Re: Smoked rear lights for Allroad - How to remove?

I am unaware of an OEM or aftermarket version of smoked tails for the A6 avant or allroad, butI have seen some good DIY versions using tint spray. To remove the tails, as 02alltoad says, just pop the covers off the two inner side panels in the luggage area (the driver side where the tool tray is located and the passenger side where the Bose amp is located. each tail light is fastened by four 10mm nuts. Pics of the sedan's taillights from inside, but you get the idea here...

Re: Smoked rear lights for Allroad - How to remove?

i sprayed the lights and plate suround on the 4.2 just to test and i think it turned out good but like frank said its a bitch to get off, something got in the paint of one and that shit would not come off, i ended up sanding most of it all off and starting over cause i didnt want one darker than the other. on my allroad i think im going to try the tint film and see how it looks. a friend of mine had his a4 done and i didnt like it cause it wasnt flat it looked like it had water under it but the stuff he used was a clear bra type that was tinted not window tint.
