Overhauled Secondary Air Pump and...

I had a strange consequence to my recent DIY overhaul of my SAP. For the last couple of months my CEL light has been coming on every other day or so and I just use my ODBII to keep turning it off until I get it repaired. Codes are for Exhaust gas temperature sensor. So, my SAP recently started doing the jet engine/dentist drill. I found an awesome DIY step by step on here to overhaul it so did that this past weekend. In the process I found a cracked hose (vacuum) somewhere underneath the coolant reservoir. Wasn't a liquid carrying hose and was pretty short, looked specialty, so I did a duct tape job on it. I finished by air pump DIY and voila, no more noise. Also, no more CEL after I had consistently been getting one every other day, sometimes once a day. Now, I'm not sure if it was related to the SAP or the cracked hose I 'patched'. How would those be related to the exhaust gas temp sensor. I'm glad it seems to be fixed, but just thought someone might know why.

I agree, I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but had really never been in the engine bay of my 2.7T since I got it last Feb. This write up was a great road map for me and it worked!!! I will say I spent a good hour trying to loosen the 10mm nut that is on the right side down about 6 inches......I think my 10mm wrench was about the same length. :(

Usually 9/10 times it is a hose that throws the CEL and not the secondary air injection pump itself.

The noise the air pump was making was like a high pitched whining sound, like a dentist drill I noticed about two weeks before I overhauled it. But it wasn't constant, would come and go when the SAP came on for the first 90 seconds or so upon startup. From what I researched, it would have gotten worse and eventually seize up.

I figured my patch job was the solution to the CEL since the light has been on and off for the past 6 mos or so and the SAP noise just started recently.

For what it's worth, I would just replace it with a new one for $200 since you have to remove the intake manifold. If it were something easier to access I would say rebuild it.

Not for $800-$1000 the dealership or anyone else was going to charge! Even if you are doing it yourself it is $400+ for a new pump, not $200. And removing the Y pipe isn't that hard. Definitely worth trying an overhaul to anyone out there having the same problem.
