    A6 4.2 temp gauge/sensor

I have found a bunch of threads on this, but none exactly to the 4.2 liter. I have a 2002 and the temp gauge is just flat to the left. Car blows hot air and engine seems to run fine, could the sensor be the problem and where the heck is it located? seems like an easy DIY for all the other engines. I looked around the 4.2 trying to follow lines and I think I may have found a black object that fits the dscription with a few small wires coming out of the top and what looks like the c clip you should also replace. This was at the severe back of the engine underneath the big air hoses--those would have to be removed. Is that it and how does one go about removing and replacing it? Also, would this seem to fit the "problem" or does it sound more like thermostat? Thanks guys I look forward to being a part of this community.

    Re: A6 4.2 temp gauge/sensor

would that be what I am seeing under the big air hoses with the 4 little wires coming out of it? if so pulled the clip--it broke of course and tried to pull it out, but it is stuck--any tips to remove safely without harming the harness. I already replaced the clip with a new one so it can be driven

It could be the temperature sending unit too, mine had gone bad and i was getting the same symptoms. Not sure where it lives though. Just had it replaced when i had the TB done so it might not be that accessible.

Warm the car a tad. It'll come out. Just don't warm it to where it's too hot to touch.

just be sure you realease the pressure on the overfill tank cap before you pull it out, my friend did it to his A4 and he got coolant splashed on his arm and the car was just warm.. ouch! but mine i released it before hand and it didnt spit everywhere just sat in the line, not one ounce of overflowing. it was pretty easy for me to do just had to move somethings out of the way but it was a good expierence.

it has been snowy and cold here although I have a garage I have not tackled it again. I will try again on one of the warmer days this week. I need some time to let my nuckles heal. :)
