    Re: A little RS4 project

Cutouts with variable flaps. I can run with it closed, open it all the way, or any point in-between. It's the variable part that makes it nice so you can actually 'tune' the sound - controlled by a switch so I can adjust the flaps on the fly.

Wouldn't that negatively affect your torque once opened?

    Re: A little RS4 project

hehe, I got it done on my S4, LOVE IT, I leave them open all the time! But I had mine installed much further back, literally right before the muffler. It may have lost a little torque, but the sound is incredible! I've done multiple long trips with em, and it's really not that bad, even at highway cruising speeds. So far I haven't scraped at all, although am going to be doing c.o. soon. But mine are much nearer the rear wheels, so it'd have to be a much bigger bump than compared to having it in the center of the car.

I got them from this guy, pretty well made (I bought the stainless steel ones). http://www.badlanzhpe.com/ I just took it to a local muffler shop, they cut right before the mufflers with a sawazz. Then they cut off a little more pipe (up until about where they brace together) and then welded in the cutouts facing back. I didn't bother buying the electronic butterfly valves as I've heard some tend to leak or get stuck (not always, but some have). But I do have metal plates that act as caps with screws and gaskets to cover it. You obviously would need to wait for it to be completely cool.

I don't have any videos of my car with this done as I don't have a good video camera (sorry guys). But I have quite a few friends who are really into cars (all European cars) and everyone who has heard it was absolutely amazed by the sound. Def worth trying out if you're just concerned with the sound rather than spending 1500+ on a catback system (yes guys, I know it's not the same, but I wanted sound, I don't drag, and have never tracked it, so 300tq is enough to get me around!). It made me fall in love with my car all over again, and downshifting is a joy like never before. Plus with the reduced back pressure, the rpms drop faster (which I like a lot more, but did have to kinda learn shift points again for smoothness).

There is a video on youtube of a guy with a B6 S4 who did something like this, and while it gives a ROUGH idea, it doesn't do it justice and is not really true of the sound. I think the video is almost louder than my car (I'm thinking he might not have the resonators on there or maybe a highflow dp). I think I searched S4 Straight Pipes on youtube and it'll show up (a silver car). He has 1 vid in the car and one of him taking off outside of the car.

I spent about $100 getting all the parts (no electronic butterfly valve), and paid the muffler guy $70 all said and done out the door.

Oh yea, one more thing, hehe,

    TUNNELS ARE AWESOME

I go out of my way now to find tunnels, just amazing sound in them with this done!

    Re: A little RS4 project

I did this a while back with QTP electric cutouts. Added them to the mid pipe. The electric cutouts are nice because you can open and close them when you want. They will leak when closed unless you goop on RTV copper and that should do the trick.
All you need are the cutouts. Take them to a muffler shop and have them cut them in where they can fit. Then have them add a few inches of pipe on the other side to aim the exhaust down. (if you dont it can melt the plastic under the car)

That's not going to scrape at all... it's directly under the tires, unless he goes over sideways, he should be fine.

    Re: A little RS4 project

I used the Race Ready kit from Jegs...

It includes everything you need - the cutouts, valves, tips, gaskets, wiring, and switch. Lifetime warranty on the valves and valve motors, too.

We removed the center resonator and installed an H pipe and the cutouts are at the rear axle. Even with the valves closed it still sounds nice and deep. When you crack the valves slightly it sounds like the millteck non-resonated exhaust, and when you open it further it gets louder and more angry. Def the best bang for the buck. We'll probably cut the tips down some more. I haven't hit anything with them, but they don't need to be as long as they are.

Hey John, there was that Milltek system that was up for sale a while ago where the person had put cutouts right before the rear mufflers and fabricated the RS4 muffler flap system to work on the cutouts so the S button would open and close the cutout and not the door flap in the muffler. I think that the system started out as a resonated non-valved Milltek.

    Re: A little RS4 project

It sounds really, really good! I've been meaning to post some sound clips but with the winter weather and the snow I haven't been able to. I'd be happy to meet up with you one of these days and let you hear the system...

I bought the kit and had Ken Garff Audi here in Orem install it. The tech that does all the work on my car is named Dagan. Brandon is the service advisor that I work with there.

I'm sure that they would be happy to do another one - they worked out all the kinks on my car so it would be a pretty straight forward install.

Let me know if you're around this week or next and we can meet up. Maybe you can help me with some video...

I'd like to see and hear your car one day, if possible. I live north of you in SLC. Did you replace your downpipes, or just pop that setup in with the existing stock downpipes (precat+maincat intact) and before the stock resonators?

Does the butterfly valve leak when closed?

    Re: A little RS4 project

I finally shot some video last night after our Utah Chapter ACNA board meeting in Park City.

The exhaust on the Imola Yellow RS4 (mine) has the exhaust cutout flaps open, so it's pretty much straight unmuffled (H-Pipe in place of center resonator). The exhaust on the Avus Silver RS4 (Mark Fankhauser's) is stock.

Check the OP in this thead for a poor picture of what the setup looks like underneath...
