Upgrading suspension and looking for opinions..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm currently stg 2 and acquiring parts to go stg 3 by summer along with body work and the rest of my maint. I just bought the car 6 months ago at a really good price from a member on here and had it shipped my way but it definately needed work. From what I can tell it came with H&R springs on stock shocks and I need to do something about it. I'm guessing I could either go with some shocks like koni or bilestiens(sp), I love a low ride as I had h&r/koni on my GS but wanted the adjustability for the new england weather. What do yous think of these choices of CO's?

    STaSIS streets
    Vogtland
    Tein SS

I hear good things about STaSIS and Vogtland on these cars but not much with the Tein's. I see the Tein SS has adjustability in dampness but I'm new to the S and havent seen any reviews. Any and all help is appreciated!

I had vogtland coilovers on my previous B5 s4. Great product in my opinion. Couldn't have been more pleased.

Yeah, I was torn between the Vogtlands and the STaSiS myself, but eventually went with the SS's... I loved them at first, but the more I drive the more I wish they were just a little stiffer. I seem to notice the "float" more these days, esp. when cruising fast on the highway. I'll prolly switch to a set of GT's or Tracksports if/when I eventually track this car, but the SS are very nice for the streets.

I've had my Vogtland GTs for about a month now and absolutely love them! awesome product. Way less body roll, not harsh on the street at all.

I have Vogs and I really liked them. No ass squat when taking off hard and good handling. Ride was some stiffer than stock, but enough to feel the difference. Def not like like those hondas u see bouncing around on every little bump.

I like stasis for the price point and they they are using Koni Dampers. I'm running bone stock right now, but if i do upgrade, it will be stasis.

^Yeah, the STaSiS kits are nice cause they come pre-dampened and ride height adjusted. I had a set of adjustable Konis (almost identical) on my MKIV GTi, and wasn't as impressed as I am with these. You can literally just slap 'em on, get an alignment, and you're all set... All I've done to them since install is spray that lubricant on the shock rods every so often, and that's it!

edit: yes, the dampening adjustment feature is somewhat useless once the c/o's have been installed... Once must be sure they have it right the first time

Skip TrackSports. No good at the track. No good on the street. Jump straight to MotorSports if you are serious about tracking. Myself (and a lot of others) have made this mistake.

Yeah, I know the TS's aren't exactly the ideal setup for the track, but they might be good for a weekend warrior or budget-minded enthusiest Unfortunately there's quite a difference in price between the Ohlins and the TS's, which makes it hard for some to "do it right the first time"... Believe me, IF I have the extra scratch when the time comes, I'll opt for the Ohlins but I also want a contingency plan

dude i dont even have balls enough to mess with that. when i called them they warned me not to.
i was talking the ride height adjustment. (which they also advised against adjusting)
the spinny things dont have enough notches for the wrench to grab. takes FOREVER to adjust

you shouldn't be raising and lowering your car all the time anyway, unless you get an alignment right after. its incredibly easy to change your toe enough to cause uneven tire wear by making even the smallest height adjustment. anyone who has used an alignment machine will tell you the same thing.

Yup, MSs are hella expensive. If I were to do it all again, and didn't have the cash for MSs (or didn't track much), here's what I'd do... Get something a bit more street oriented to start with. Perhaps GTs or SSs. Enjoy that for a bit. Then throw on an h-sport rear bar (perhaps the front bar is good with those coilovers too, I dunno). Enjoy that for a bit. Finally get a STaSIS center diff.

You'd start off with a nice ride. Then improve the handling a bunch with the bar. Then get some more rear bias for track. Seems like you'd get some nice improvements with minimal investment.
